Just purchased a 2018 trd-off-road. I had the dealership undercoat it, but worried that it wasn’t well done or that they may have missed some spots. I know they’re just suppose to coat the frame but what do you guys think about the other rust? Should I be worried and what should I do about it?

    appreciate the feedback

Nothing looks terrible. Maybe brush and coat the hitch and change the differential fluid this weekend.

The whole idea, is that the coating will prevent the rust beforehand. I’m sure the coating after will help stave off more, but not much help on existing rust. Looks normal for a salt belt 2018 that no one had regularly coated before winter.

All depends on how crazy you want to get. POR15, if you want to spend time. If not Fluid Film, and they do make it in black. That's all I did with mine, every fall.

I hope you didn't pay much for that job. They should've hit everything but the exhaust, brakes, drive shaft, etc moving parts. Clearly missed axles and more.

Did they paint over rust with a rubberized coating?

Your gonna be ok. Your trucks gonna be ok. Looking at the rust on your leaf springs and axle, I think everything else is probably in fine shape. Get a few cans of woolwax and spray those areas that concern you. It won't make the rust disappear, but it'll keep it from getting worse.

I woolwaxed my truck this afternoon and those areas on mine looked about the same as yours. I coated them and I'm not going to worry about them.

You've got a 5 year old truck. It's gonna rust a bit. Your not going to lose it to corrosion in the next 5 years.

Didn’t pay much at all, was surprised it wasn’t an outrageous price from the dealership so I decided to add it on.

Are they really suppose to coat the axels leaf springs, differential cover if these things can be replaced if needed unlike the frame? Should I coat these myself then?

You’re right. Just want to maintain it so that someone else will buy it 5 or more years down the road.

It needs fluid film or wool wax.

The frame wasn’t so bad and supposedly they clean it before applying. Although I doubt they did a half decent job, atleast it’s covered. Not to worried about it

Someone will want it in 5 years. And in 10 years. Cover up those spots to keep the rust in check. Use some fluid film, woolwax, LPS 3 or something like it.

If you want to talk about maintenance, you should check out some of the oil change interval threads here on TW! They usually set the dumpster ablaze!

They should be coated. Did they even spray the rockers, underside of the bed or do a cavity wax?

Nobody wants to see rust anywhere. But if they got the frame, that's what's most important. Anything that bolts up to the frame can be easily replaced if needed.

Your 2nd pic seems sketchy to me. Looks like someone sprayed a shitload of black paint on the crossmember. You can see the overspray on the cam bolt and the front prop shaft flange. Nothing else looks like it got any coating at all, though you dont show much of the frame. Piss poor job by whoever did it IMO.

Do some research into Fluid Film, Rust Check, etc. Theres a few other brands and they all do the same thing. You'll find a ton of info about it on here and google. Nothing in your pics looks terrible yet. If you can get it under oiled this year and keep up with it every year in the future you'll be in good shape

Can I cover up seized up bolts or replace these
After taking a closer look at it, it does seem they did a decent job with everything else. Just surprise they didn’t do the rear axel. And you’re right the 2nd pic looks sketch to me too. It is undercoat but not sure why they didn’t spray the entire thing, because it looks like the were spraying just the subframe and the rest is just overspray onto the bolt.

not sure about the cavity wax, but everything else is sprayed just fine. Just skipped the rear axle.

Definitely a shitty job from the dealership, but like mentioned the surface rust was already there, it won't go away.

Next year, go to Krown rustproofing were they'll not only do your frame, but will do the whole truck. You won't get any warranty as it's already to 5 years old, but doing it yearly will drastically save it from further rust down the road. When I go, I pay $120 Ca$h deal. My trucks 6 year old paint still looks like new and I dont wax or anything...
