Hello, please forgive me as I just can't seem to wrap my head around what wheels fit, offset, backspace, etc. I've read and searched, and think I understand it, but when looking for wheels, sometimes they provide offset info, other times backspace, then there is lug info, etc.

I've decided to just go with a set of steel wheels, I like the look of the spare steel wheels with the 16 hole. I also see the FJ Cruiser wheels are similar, will the steel FJ wheels fit a 2002 Tacoma?

I currently have the stock wheels with 285/75/R16 mud terrain tires that rub and want to get a set of the steel wheels and new set of tires that won't rub. There is a 3 inch lift on the truck. What size would still look good, but not rub?

Also, where is a good place to order a set of OEM steel wheels? There are no good salvage yards around for tacomas and I have'nt seen anything in the bst section.

    Thanks for any help.

Does anybody know if there are center caps that will fit the 16" steel wheels with the 16 holes" I've read the threads and it seems most people either paint the center of the hubs that show, or just leave them. I'd like to try and find something that will work as it looks nicer to me. Thanks.

All of the Toyota center caps for steel wheels sit in notches in the center hub area of the wheel. When you put the wheel on the cap pinches between the wheel and the center of the hub. The 16" spare wheels do not have these notches. Any "styled" steel wheel from Toyota has those notches. The OEM 17" FJ Cruiser steel wheel also has those notches. The aftermarket equivalents do not.

If you see in this photo the center bore is not rounded, there's notches which is what the center caps sit in.

Be aware that when you fit the center caps with these wheels the space between the center cap and the lug nut is VERY tight if you use the standard steel wheel nuts, at least in my experience. I needed a standard thin-wall socket to get them on and off, a regular lug wrench surely would not fit down there.

I suppose if you got creative you might be able to notch a stock 16" spare wheel to fit the center caps, but I wouldn't be so certain.

I purchased my wheels new from a dealer who did a wholesale online price and picked them up. I got re-pop center caps on eBay at 25% of the price of the dealer. They used the same center caps from 1993-ish on across steel wheels on the Pick-Up, T1000, 4Runner and maybe even the 1G Tacomas.

As far as fitment and offset on the 1G, I'm not an expert on that, but I assume it wouldn't be an issue as I believe the 1G had lower offset wheels than the 2G / 3G as most 1Gs I've seen using OEM 2G wheels have them much further inboard than the 2G trucks.

Thanks for the information. It looks like no center caps for me. I also went to the dealer and they price matched online, so I got a set of the black 16" steel wheels, with the 16 holes.

I think I'm going to get skinny tires, 235/85/R16. The truck currently has a set of BFG Mud Terrains that are 285/75/R16, so the new ones will be considerably thinner.

Nomad convoys have the same look but are pricey.
