I have the Haynes book for my 2010 Tacoma. I don't ever refer to it....I find it too generic.

There is an extremely high probability that what ever you want to do to your truck, someone on this forum has written about, a lot with step by step instructions, pictures, torque specs etc. There are detailed maintenance schedules posted here, telling you what and when to change things.

I had a Haynes manual for my first car, a 1980 Civic. Back then that was the only source of information and I think the quality of the content in older Haynes manuals was better, but that's subjective.

For all my wrenching, I use a Toyota electronic service manual, a 2005-2009 Haynes manual and the internet. Tacoma World and You Tube are awesome but find the electronic service manual I have really tedious to scroll through when I need quick information. I find that I often refer to the Haynes manual, either as supplemental info or outright when I need something quick. Maybe I'm old school (been using Haynes manuals on Toyota trucks for almost the last 30 years) but I quickly found the driveshaft torque spec in my Haynes just yesterday.

We have a 2006 Tacoma and a 2014 and the big change between the two is that the old Haynes manual doesn't have information on the Secondary Air Injection System present on 2012+ trucks.

My last Toyota truck, 1990 pickup, I had the Chiltons and Hayes printed manuals. My buddy was service manager at a local Toyota dealership so when the going got tough, I called him. The Chilton manual was the best, I'd had them for almost all my vehicles. The Hayes was too general, but had a bit of info from time to time. These days, I would say the best manual is google.com.

    Try here at TIS.
Or you can sign up for the website and pay for 24hr access then download all the FSM's for your vehicle in PDF form and store them on your computer. That's that I did. Someone a long time ago made a .bat file that would auto download all the files from that website, you just had to do some finagling with your login credentials to prime the downloader. You still had to pay for access though so it wasn't free but it would save you time downloading every file one by one. It took me like 3 hours to queue up everything for download. Just a thought.

I had a few Chilton manuals many years ago. In my experience they were a poor substitute for the actual FSM and a waste of $. Yes, you could do brakes, etc, with them, but when it was time to do a head gasket and figure out how to time the engine, they just glossed over that as people that buy Chilton manuals don't do things like this.

I guess if you only want to do basic maintenance, then they are ok. If you want to tackle a timing chain and head gasket, then I'd say no.
