Been reading all these post about creaky clutch pedals getting fixed. Mine does this and the last time I was at the dealer they told me I could get it fixed under my warranty. I never really notice it and don't think my clutch feels broken or anything. But it sounds like this makes quite a difference. Guess I need to make an appointment to get this taken care.

    A question for the proletariat.

I've got just under 65k on my 2016. I've had Redline MT-90 in it for about 25k or so and I plan to change it soon, but that's effectively irrelevant (hopefully).

I've noticed this summer that maybe 60% of the time I go to release the clutch in gear from a stop when I'm right at about the friction point on the clutch I feel a faint clunk and I notice the shifter will pop backwards a bit. I've been able to replicate in 1st, 2nd and reverse. It originally only happened on 90°+ days but lately I've been able to replicate it in cooler weather. I don't recall this being normal for my truck (although it's not impossible that I haven't noticed it) and I'm wondering where to start looking for a diagnosis.

Admittedly I haven't been great at checking if the dealer did any zerk lubing when I've been in for service, but I don't know where to start. Most of the clunk comments relate to the ADM, but if it's a function of having the ADM, I can live with that as long as I know what it is.

Just swapped out my fluid for the ford motorcraft XT-M5-QS, felt almost no different if anything a bit more notchy.

I bought 3 quarts from Rockauto, I’m a little worried that I didn’t get genuine fluid since my bottle is a little different than every other picture. Mine doesn’t have the warning label on the front and also no serial number on the back, it does have something that looks like a date in black on the top part of the back of the container..Can anybody verify?

Well that Motorcraft stuff is recommended as a replacement for GL4 transmission oil. So you shouldn't be doing any damage with it. New GL5 gear oils are fine in differentials and transfer cases, but manual transmission with brass synchronizers will be damaged by it over time.

No change is probably a good thing. I used Redline MT-90 and although it feels very smooth, it's almost too much...sometimes I go back into reverse when I go for 1st a little too eagerly.

I've always used redline mt90. It's done well for me.

Motorcraft also does not own its own facilities. They come up with a blend and have a 3rd party produce and package the oil. There is a chance that you are looking at bottles that came from two different facilities. If you are really concerned, you could reach out to motorcraft to verify your bottles are legit.

I'd start with your throwout bearing -- that's really the main thing taking load/transitioning during that operation so IMO most likely culprit.

I was wondering/trying to find a thread onwhat was most recommended fluid brand and spec/# for the 3rd gen Tacomas though, most of the threads I found on here referred to the 2nd gen, and see a lot of mentioning of redline and the ford fluid.

Like, Are the 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas significantly different in in anything that would matter for fluid selection? I was trying to find something on what to get when it's time.

Probably not going to diy, but planning to get the accumulator bypass/delete done, I could go back and read further, but I can't even remember offhand if the fluid to refill after that is a different type of the same as the mt fluid.

There are a lot of subjective opinions on manual trans fluids. 2nd gen and 3rd gen MTs call for the same spec. They don’t feel the same to drive though, that’s just the nature of each trans design.

I have used Redline on other vehicles…my Jeep’s Aisin trans (which is almost the same trans as the R155/R156 5speeds in the 2nd and 3rd gen 4cyls). I also used redline in my Nissan Frontier 6 speed. It was okay in the jeep, very notchy in the Nissan. I decided to skip past it in the Tacoma.

I tried the Ford stuff and it seemed better in cold but notchy in the warm. I’ve tried a few conventional and synthetic blends that are more notchy when cold but super smooth warm. Since transmissions are warmed up majority of drive time, I prefer what works better when warm.

When doing the accumulator, you would be dealing with brake fluid. Clutch hydraulics use brake fluid and have nothing to do with the MT fluid. DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 would be fine for clutch/brake fluid. DOT 5 would be very bad, so don’t make that mistake.

Which mt fluid did you settle on as your favorite ? I was kinda thinking the same (it's gonna warm upas we drive), and probably won't swap out every winter/spring? with relatively low mileage. If I had to decide now, I might pick Toyota OEM fluid, just to stop reading/thinking it.

Yeah, brake type fluid for the clutch fluid is what I thought I read, but I didn't wanna repeat wrong info if I misremembered. I don't usually work on my vehicle if I can help it, but may end up learning more than just basics with the Taco

I’m using Driven Oil 80W-90 GL4 which is a full conventional. I got it at Summit Racing. However it’s colder up where you are. I used and liked Ravenol 75W-90 semi-synthetic GL4 as well. That would be a better choice for colder environment while still working well warmed up. My stuff is not bad when cold but it definitely takes a few miles when it’s cold out to get warm. One alternative is to double clutch for the first mile for it to stay ultra smooth when it’s cold.

I was never able to find Toyota fluid, I don’t think they actually sell it.

Google says Toyota fluid is available from parts.toyota.com

Also the dealerships all sell it.

    But

There are 10,000 other options, and a lot of those options have the EZ packs which is highly recommended

I looked for hours and could not find the actual fluid from Toyota.

I also haven’t seen a single dealer sell it.

The only part number I ever found was 08885-81596. It does not come up on the parts site at all or any dealership.
