    Hi -
New poster here, although I've lurked for a while without posting
I've got a 2000 2wd tacoma (base model) that I've had for a few months now. It's always had a problem where the front end was super soft and bouncy. I've seen a few posts around the internet about the same problem, but not with the base model truck, so I figured I'd post something here.

2 months ago, I replaced front and rear shocks with KYB Excel-G replacements, which solved my rear end bounce but the front end remains bouncy as heck. I have no clue what could be happening.
I'm going to do upper and lower ball joints soonish, so I figured while I'm at it I might try and tackle the bounciness too, but I have no idea where to start.
    Any ideas?

how many miles on the truck. Maybe it's time for new coil springs up front.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, I'm going to measure ride height when I get some time later this week. ~190k on the truck currently

If new front shocks didn't improve things then it's probably normal. Those little 5 lug trucks are basically a Camry with a truck bed

That's what I thought 2 months ago but I've recently noticed some cupping in my front tires which is a telltale sign of bad shocks. Now I'm questioning the integrity of my springs and shocks up front

Agreed, bouncy is probably coilovers. Shocks control the speed at which the suspension move, springs and leafs control how much the suspension moves. Hit the people up at suspensionlifts.com, they are quick to respond via email and after a lot of searching had the best price on assembled coilovers. They can set you up with a set that is stiffer than stock.

While my truck was not "bouncy", it would pitch and roll when I drove over dips in the road. It was especially bad on the interstates.

When I replaced my tires with Michelins, all that went away.

Problem is, the tires I replaced were also Michelins...

I had a lot of cupping on my tires because I kept them inflated to the pressure stated on the door jamb (28 psi) and that was severely understated for the tires I was using.

I wouldn't spend money on springs, if they were bad the truck would be sagging and riding lower than normal in the front. Thats really the only way they can fail.

You've already replaced the shocks, and KYBs aren't a crappy brand. It's possible you got some defective shocks right out of the box but I doubt it.

You've only had the truck a few months, I'll bet you're just not used to how squishy and basic the suspension is. Suspension wise, it's got more in common with a 90s Buick LeSabre than a 6-lug Tacoma

I took my truck to both my shop teacher (he teaches steering and suspension) and another shop, they both agreed the shocks weren't working correctly. I'll be taking my truck in to get new shocks put in, and AutoZone agreed to refund me for the defective ones. Really surprised about the KYBs being broken but I guess they're not perfect.

I'd do it myself but I don't have the time at the moment, and the shop will also give me a warranty on the new ones.

The consensus here is Bilsteins are the closest to stock replacements, have a co-worker who bought a new Taco and I guess they are stock now.

I'd buy Bilsteins but they're just too dang expensive for me.
