URD mk3 supercharger

Hey there!
I am really looking into buying a supercharger for my 08 4.0l tacoma. I have done a bit of research but I can’t seem to decide which is the right one. I am mildly cost concerned, and don’t want to have to buy a ton of other little parts to complete the build. Is the URD mk3 supercharger kit (stage1) a good buy?

Me too. It’s a steep ask. Not many go under the $6300 mark for the mag kits.
Haven’t seen a new used / used one sell in a while.
Haven’t seen much on URD anywhere. Sadly.

I've had my Magnuson for 4 years now and it's ridiculous how much they jumped in price. I paid $4600 for mine now they're over 6g's

 

Better off with a Procharger than a URD that requires the uconn ems.

I believe the rotrex centrifugal units that URD uses for their kits can be prone to failure.

Magnusson or procharger would be the way to go.

There's a procharger thread that's worth looking into, I believe they have a couple of issues with those kits but they might not be a big deal.

I will add that the magnusson is somewhat underwhelming in stock form until you start adding additional mods. It does wake up a lot with a bit of work.

It basically puts the truck into the power range it should have come with stock.

 

Yeah that’s what i’ve been reading about those. With the 2.85” pulley it’ll boost it a bit more?

 

Do the ProCharger Superchargers require much tuning or extra money beyond the installation? Becuase I live in a semi remote area and it would be a bit of a hassle to get over somewhere where I’d have to dyno and tune. But I could still manage that if it is a must do.

 

I think the canned tune that comes with the procharger is suspect so you'd want an alternate tune using Hptuners most likely. JustDSM from the Hptuners thread has done tunes for procharged 2nd Gens and uses data logging to fine tune so no dyno needed.

The flash could be done yourself with the tune from JustDSM.

 

I just did this and it gave me about 2 psi and it's absurd how much of a difference that makes.

 

I’ll have to look more into that. Still insanely expensive but magnuson’s are on the cheaper side. Magnuson seems like it’d be a bit more of my style because I am looking for more torque across the board instead of the high boost at 3,500-3,800rpms like the procharger.

 

i just put in the magnuson and am pretty thrilled with it. i was never expecting it to be a sports car, just something that will make towing less awful

 

Here's my setup with the 2.85" pulley. Pulled a 3800lb camper pretty nicely. Converted to a dual Spal fan setup with PWM controller and now it REALLY pulls nicely. Faster than an Ecoboost F150 (fella at the light tried me and found out) Only downside to the Magnusson kit is the belt tensioner is kinda weak. Broke one already but there are upgrade options in the TRD Supercharger tips and tricks thread. I opted to reinforce a replacement Gates tensioner I got from Oreilly's.

 

Ma_Taco; where is your write up on the dual electric fan set up. I been pondering this set up forever now. This may be an old thread, but that fan set up tho...

 

I didnt do a write up but it's not hard but it's pricey. I used a Derale 16797 PWM controller to control the fans. The shroud I got from Speedway Motors on Amazon but had to add about 4" of aluminum material to the bottom to cover the entire radiator

The pricey part was the 250a alternator from JS Alternators and the Big 7 cable kit from toyotacables.com and the biggest Odyssey battery I could fit. The factory 130a alternator worked but battery voltage was down to 11.9-12.3v when the fans were on at 100% so I upgraded the whole system while I was at it.
