Do Tacoma’s Have Issues With New Tires?

I have a 2019 TRD Off-Road and I just had new tires put on within the last week (Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme - 265/70R-16 with stock wheels).

These are the first new set of tires I’ve had put on the truck since I’ve bought the truck new.

I’m sitting at Discount for the third time since getting them due to vibrations at highways speeds 65+ MPH.

The second time I brought the truck after the initially put them on, they found the left front was not balanced fully and for whatever reason they moved that wheel to the rear left. After I left I got more vibrating coming from the rear of the truck. Before it was more towards the front with vibrations coming through the steering wheel and seats.

So as I sit here at Discount as I type this up, they said there’s a possibility that they might have to move the tire on the wheel to a different position.

Is it common to see issues like this with these trucks, Tacomas after getting new tires or wheels put on?

Yes they are. I’m at a different shop this time from the initial place that installed them. They weren’t sure if the first place did the road force test or not.

 

Doesn't sound like the truck is the issue in this case. Seems like simply out of balance.

 

You’re probably right. The guy I talked to said sometimes Toyota’s can be trickier to get the tires happy.

 

Sometimes tires are faulty and difficult to balance.

Sometimes you get a real goober of a tech that will blindly stack weights to stop the machine from beeping at him, and then he'll stack more weights on the opposite side of the wheel because the machine is still beeping at him. That actually happened to me, I could have probably bought dinner from the scrap value of the weights they threw at my tires. After I made them scrape my wheels, get a better tech, and start over, that's when my tires finally balanced.

I'm betting you got unlucky and the shop goob picked your ticket. Every shop has one.

 

Unlikely the truck. Discount tire is great, but tire shops can have issues like any other business. Once my wheels /tires had a 40 mph shake after a rotation done there, I took it back and they said their machine was not calibrated properly and re did it, other than that, no real problems.They are honest and will make it right.

 

It’s either user error installing the tires, user error balancing the tires, or user error making the tires.

There’s nothing special about Toyota wheels or Toyota in general that makes them harder to balance

 

Sounds like an issue with either the balance of the tire or a belt concern or defect in the tire. If the tire is calling for high, uncommon wheel weights both the "heavy" point on the wheel and tire could be in line. This causes major out of balance concern. If so, the tire should be broken down and rotated 45 to 90 degrees. See how the balance is then. I've experienced this not often, but have. If that's not the issue than it a defective tire.

I would say that is probably BS. Either the tires are balanced properly or that are not.

 

BS. If you have factory wheels, road force balance and DT is using the correct adapter getting them balanced correctly should not be an issue. It’s not the truck.

 

It’s not the truck, Toyota wheels are no different than any other manufacturers wheels to mount and balance. It’s all on the installer, I’ve mounted plenty of tires in my 40 plus years, some are tricker than others to get the perfect balance but it’s on the installer skills.

 

Well I took the truck down I-10 and got up to about 80 MPH and the front seat seems to intermittently vibrate. I’m not too convinced that the tires are where they need to be as being balanced. As far as in town they seem to have no issues.

At this point is balancing tires really this much of a science? Before I left, the guy I talked to said if it still happens then it’s probably the tire which they put on the right rear. So this one tire has gone from the left front to the left rear and now the right rear. So who knows if it’s more than just this one tire causing issues.

I just know the truck wasn’t doing this before getting new tires

 

If the vibration is still there after all this effort for highway tires then its time to swap them out for different ones. Go for the same brand or try another tire company. You don't want to be dealing with crappy tires when it comes time to do your tire rotation in 5 to 8k miles.

 

I’d like to see how much weight is on each tire/wheel. Also if the tires have red or yellow dot on them I’d like to see where they located those. Also did they use perimeter weights on both sides or are the wheel weights on the inside of the wheel?

 

Well after multiple trips to try and get these Hankook Dynapro’s balanced I have officially ordered a set of Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015.

The Hankook’s always had some vibration which was not there before with the stock Goodyear Wranglers. I even had my dad drive the truck around and he said they didn’t feel right either.

The manager did try to blame Toyota about how sometimes it can be difficult to get them properly balanced. He also blamed the Hankook’s as an all-terrain tire and that can affect how the truck rides, which I didn’t buy that either. Plus the truck is stock height and has the original suspension. So yeah it was hard to buy any of those possibilities.

Anyways I should have the Geolandar’s installed tomorrow and I’m hoping for a better outcome.
