Not all dot sights are the same. I've tried more that I didn't like than I have liked. The Holson reflex sights are the only ones I've found that I can use. Not saying there aren't other good ones, but that is the only type I've found that I can live with. I like them on a handgun that is a duty weapon, home defense weapon, or if open carried. They make a concealed carry gun too bulky IMO.

I like them less so on a rifle. As long as you don't need much precision and don't plan to shoot much past 75-100 yards, they are OK. But on a rifle, I still prefer a low powered variable optic. On 1X they are every bit as fast on target as any dot sight for fast shooting at closer ranges. Being able to go up to 4X gives you enough precision for shots out to at least 300 yards. A conventional scope is every bit as good in low light and for equal quality will cost less.

The only downside to a conventional optic is that they add more weight and bulk.

I put a dot sight on a .22 rifle. It was adequate, but not precise. Maybe my age has something to do with it, tho.
