I would agree, 265s are perfect for 4.88s. I just got mine back Friday.

If you are going bigger definitely go 5.29s.

    $1500ish for gears
$1000 for labor ($500 per axle)
I'm also buying an E locker and having them install it in the front while they are in there already. The e locker will run roughly $1500

I paid 3600 for all in on 4.88s, which they kept and broke in and changed out all the fluids, bearing replacement and new rotors and pads.

So now that you have the 4.88 are you satisfied so far or is there a lurking feeling you should have gone 5.29?

5.29s for sure. Installed them on my 2016 DCLB TRD Sport 4x4 auto transmission with 285/70/17s. Did tons of research into the mega threads here on TW, chatted with multiple shops here in Colorado who specialize in Toyota off-road installs / accessories, watched YouTube videos from Nitro Gear and Axles founder and everyone pointed to 5.29s for our third gen’s with the six speed auto - regardless of specs (tire size, weight, etc).

I can still hit 80 mph at around 2700 rpm. Pulls so much better city driving and nearly eliminates the classic gear hunting on the highways or the on inclines.

Nitros founder said they created the 4.88s to introduce the Tacoma market to regears - they needed to start with something more conservative so people wouldn’t immediately dismiss the increased gear ratio. From there they developed the interest for even more gearing and rolled out the 5.29s. He said if he could have had the interest from the onset they would have developed the 5.29s first, but just needed to capture the market.

Thanks so much for that info. I’ve been reading so many 4.88 vs 5.29 threads and it seems 5.29 are the way to go from the get go.
I guess that makes sense from Nitro- plus it gives them two sets to sell instead of just one option.
