I have more drag and less power after installing MBRP Catback black, side exit and Volant Closed Box, Dry filter, Cold air intake.

    Any thoughts?

My suggestion would be to undo what you did. Parts from the Internet are frequently a downgrade from the factory parts.

Note that no one has ever posted any good evidence that aftermarket exhaust or intakes make any difference. The engine already has a tuned cold air intake and a tuned exhaust. Unless you are making major modifications to the engine, e.g. forced induction, changing the intake and exhaust is a waste of time unless you are doing it for looks and sound.

There are many discussions on here about it.

I had that MBRP catback dual exhaust on my tacoma for about a month. Loved the sound of it around town and it didn't sound too bad on the mostly flat interstate. One weekend we decided to take a trip up the mountain. Man, my wife was reserving a rental car on the way up to get back to Phoenix. I actually think you are right, that thing seem like it lost power with that unrestricted exhaust. I am not even close to knowing what I am talking about but I believe the truck was designed to run with the factory exhaust system. With the less restrictive exhaust the amount of back pressure, what ever it's called, may have dropped the compression or something? All I know is it was embarrassing to sound like I was going 90mph and I was just doing 60mph trying get the hell out of peoples way. I gave that exhaust to the kid across the street.

That’s too funny @CaptainBart45 Ine of the guys earlier suggested I retract my install and wherever possible, use the OEM parts. Maybe this will help.
I bet the kid across the street was over the moon with your donation

@gudujarlson I think I found this forum a day and $1,000. bucks late. Alas, I think I’ll be joining the thread “Don’t do it, aftermarket exhaust”

your truck most likely did not lose power. it was just so quiet before that you didnt realise how much gas you were giving it and now the anemic v6 can actually be heard struggling for its life. a catback exhaust on these really doesn't have much affect at all good or bad. as far as intake goes it can be a little more finicky with the maf placement but volant is a fairly trusted brand that ive seen have real gains on other vehicles. only a dyno will prove what its really doing.

TRD or Borla exhaust only. Never MBRP. Stock is fine in most cases

only thing i will say is that changing the super restrictive double wall crushed y pipe has been proven to free up a few ponies. even more going with an equal length design. the urd spec u setup made over 20hp from all the research ive done and looking at dyno graphs from people like meso customs in some old threads

Please link the dyno graph and details claiming 20 hp gain from the urd spec u, if you have it handy. I’m skeptical, but I might believe it if I saw it.

It was probably the embarrassment of sounding like we were pulling 80,000 pounds of logs up the grade that made it feel like a loss in power. Could be, but if it added 20hp, I would be seriously surprised. Matter of fact we just made the same trip up the 17 on Sunday. My truck seemed to make the climb with ease compared to the last trip with that "custom" exhaust.

its admittedly hard to find ACTUAL dyno graphs for 3rd gens but there are ones here and there that ive seen while looking up y pipe relocations/ replacements like roostfactors and rj_tacos. heres one on my phone of @758_Moto truck with urd y pipe, afe intake, and kd tune.

    20220307_180943.jpg

much more can be found on the 2nd gen version which is the same y pipe with different front flanges. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/n-a-power-gains-dynos-w-mods.229882/page-9

for those that dont know the stock y pipe is double walled and intentionally restrictive to keep those cats as hot as possible. freeing that up paired with better scavenging i dont find it too hard to believe that there are gains to be had. hell if you read through the ov dump tube thread going with the aftermarket dump tubes changes the flow so much that without a dedicated tune for them the ecu cant compensate enough and you start to lose top end power. 20180830_173941.jpg

I appreciate the info, but if I understand correctly we cannot conclude much about the intake, exhaust, or tune individually because all 3 were changed. That does look like significant difference though, at least above 3k rpm.

look at 758s other posts. he dynod just intake and y pipe without tune and made 20hp. he was dissapointed only making 10 more with kdmax and switched to nexus tune after
