2016 SR access cab, 2TR-FE manual with 31,000 miles.

Driving uphill, I turned the temperature up and noticed the truck slow down suddenly, check engine light starts flashing and the trac warning light comes on and off intermittently.

Truck acts like it's only running on 1 or 2 cylinders, I didn't think it was going to make it back home. I talked to the closest Toyota service department and they said it could be many things, I'm having it towed in on Monday.

Anybody had an issue like this?

Buy a cheap scanner and read the codes. The dealership will charge $200 plus to do that. A cheap scanner can be had for around $100 at Autozone.

    ^ this.
Hook it up to an OBD2 scanner (or reader). Should give you the diagnostic code(s).
AutoZone may do this for you free of charge. ???

No, I don't have a scanner. And I live pretty far out of town, I'm afraid to try to drive to a AutoZone or Advanced Auto.

No, I've never been fond of the knob control layout so I usually pay close attention to it (but I did go out and check.)

I can't imagine what the temperature adjustment had to do with it, but that's the sequence that things happened in.

These issues are on 2016-2017 from what I can see, on posts. That's like first years of the 3rd gen, its common. Whenever there is new gen, first three years have issues.

The only other light that came on is the TRAC OFF light, but it's not on constantly. It seemed to come on while trying to go uphill or during acceleration. The check engine light is flashing even when parked.

My 03 4runner had that VSC/TRAC off light, that car was old and rusted on frame but 4x4 still worked, it might be sensor but I would not take any risks. Just get one of those 20$ scanners and it will show you code, then you can tell what is wrong with the car.

Hey guys , he’s got a 4cyl , so that is a very reliable platform and does not have the same problems as the early 2gr-fks . So I wouldn’t lump him in with other recent v6 threads

He said there are several sensor issues that could throw it into limp mode, along with more serious problems. Also said it could be an issue with mice chewing wires.

Not sure why the post I quoted didn't show up.
