Low on oil? Just a guess since it happened on a hill.

My 05 lights went crazy and my power went to 0 when I had 2 coil packs (whatever they’re called) go bad

changed them out and then a month later the others went bad. changed them all and haven’t had an issue since. Barely made it home and thought my engine was toast at the time

I wish it is sensors but according to what you said. The slowing down and feeling that truck is struggling sounds pretty bad. Have you done any towing? or any heavy payloads

No, I've never towed anything. I've loaded it down for camping trips but not since 2021.

With your low miles, I would looking for chewed wires. Mice like these car and trucks that sit around. Make nice nests for babies, and oh a snack of colorful wires just near by. Wouldn't be the first time....

I’d go with rodent. He lives way out of town, likely parks in barn or garage. Check for wire chewing, I think I’ve read about the wire insulation has something that attracts them, Of course I could be totally wrong. Good luck, get a reader

Left my Tacoma parked 2 days down in Florida. Temp dropped into 50s at night and that's low for South Florida. Something mouse or rat assembled an entire nest in the engine bay. Nothing chewed or anything but rodents definitely have a solid work ethic.

Your truck is in limp mode and will return to normal operation once you clear the codes. That's why the Trac light flashed + Check engine came on at the same time. I bet you threw a code for the Secondary air injection pump valve stuck shut or open. Let me know when you get the code and post it back here, i bet it's P2440 or P2442.

the vehicle in question is the 4 cyl, that has been in the lineup for ages. Has zero to do with the specific model year 16/17 which was new with the 3.5 2-GRFE.

Here is a list of all possible issues that will put your truck in the limp mode.
Quite a few entries. Need some diagnostic tools. Start checking wiring for these mentioned systems
Note the deactivation action. Look at these first

I keep the garage loaded with mice traps, but the service tech said they've seen an above average amount of mice damage this year. As if I didn't hate mice enough.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

    Yep.

I'm going to town tomorrow, and I'm going to stop by the auto parts stores and see if one will loan me a scanner.

    Thanks for that.

Unhooked the battery for half an hour, the check engine light didn't come on while idling but it was idling extremely rough. I didn't try to drive it.

Yep, sell it it's pure junk. 12 threads of Tacoma's "falling apart" out of the 2 million or so 3rd Gens sold.

Sure it sucks when you have an issue, but it seems diagnostic skills aren't your strong point and are slightly panicked. It is probably something relatively simple. Don't let doom merchants freak you out.

this is the best advice you’ve gotten yet. These trucks get wacky when battery voltage is out of spec. OP, can you confirm original battery? Voltage reading? I’d guess this is the root of your problem

battery is original, approaching 8 years. OP stated running an auxiliary at time of loss of power/dash lights. Can you explain why you would NOT think to check battery voltage/conneftors ??

I posted service manual issues that lead to fail-safe mode. Battery is not on the list
