    Negotiate the out the door price with zero mention of trade in. Then once you have the OTD price confirmed, tell them you're trading in.

    If they push for trade in discussion before you get a confirmed OTD price, then walk away.

    Keep in mind you're dealing with 2 separate transactions. Don't let them lump the new truck and trade in together. They will devalue the trade in even more if lumped together.

    All that said, private party sale will always be more profitable, but is more hassle. Do what you have the energy to tolerate.
