First oil change….

My ‘23 Tacoma V6 currently has 5600 miles on it. First oil change 10,000 miles with Toyota Care. Will not be in the town I purchased in winter. Spoke to lady in maintenance regarding going to another dealer. No problem. She stated Toyota recommends changing oil every 5 months regardless of mileage. Says the oil can congeal or something of this nature. I say BS. Never heard of this before. Particularly with synthetic oil. Any opinions? MTG

 

It’s 1 year or 10k I work at Toyota.

many choose to do 6 month 5000 but that’s owner discretion.

A million threads on this, but 1 year or 10k is normal driving condition which very few do. . . . in other words highway miles. There is a fair amount of evidence showing that with new modern engines it is best to only go 5k miles, but you choose as its your truck.

 

Never 10,000 ….. Oil is cheap compared to an engine!!! 5k at most or 6 months. Toyota recommends stuff to cheap out on how many oil changes they pay for and get you out of warranty. I would do the “first” oil change at 1-2k even with modern technology and tolerances there will some break in debris that you should get out of there!

 

I agree with the 5K change. I did my 1st at 3K miles, and have been changing every 5-6K afterwards. It might be OK every 10K, but as others say, oil/good filter are not all that expensive, plus whatever the cost, you're also buying a lot of peace of mind.

I drive about 6000 miles per year, so I just change my oil every March. I did my first oil change at 5000 miles just because I wanted to get fresh oil in there.

Toyota did the 10k and 20k miles oil changes and did it myself at 15k miles.

 

Every 5k at a trusted independent shop.
Tires rotated while in the neighborhood.

Same with the wife's Subaru.

Easy to remember too.

I've never believed in 10K oil changes. Been watching the "Car Care Nut" on YouTube, the host is a Certified Master Toyota Technician that now runs he's own independent shop. He does a great job of explaining repairs and breaking things down. He goes into depth below on the whole 10K oil change

 

You will never hear anyone say "you ruined your engine by changing the oil too soon".

 

I like to get a hotel room next to the dealership when I get my oil changed so I can be close by in case anything happens

 

After first oil change I will change at each 5000 miles. My initial post was for the BS the dealership stated that oil can congeal. Hell, never heard this before. Believe it to be BS. MTG

in the manual it recommends first oil change @ 5000 miles. I just took a new 23 model home yesterday ands the dealer put a sticker on the windshield that says next service is due 5001 miles.
