Just noticed this odd noise the other day. Only happens at idle when the truck is hot.
It's not the normal valvetrain clatter or the cleaning cycle. Truck makes both those sounds like normal. It will make this noise during the cleaning cycle too.

This is a faster paced very high-pitched tick. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. Does not increase with engine speed but seems to go away when revving over 1k rpm. Sometimes it's a rapid click like in the video but sometimes it will do it sporadic too.

I did check the serp belts and all pullies.

Turn the volume up and you can hear it. You can really hear it starting at 8 seconds Truck is a 2023. 8k miles.

Posted a second video I took today. Noise is more quiet and not as consistent.

Does your have the little sticker with the engine serial number on the oil control solenoid? Drivers side. Could it be that sticker flapping from the fan spinning? Just a stupid thought but figured I’d mention it

It's so odd. The noise wasn't there last night or this morning. It seems to have gotten less and less over the last week. In the videos I posted the first one was a few days before the second one and you can hear how its less drastic. Last week I did fill up with a random tank of 89 because the gas station was out of 87. I wonder if I got a bad batch of gas or something.

500ish. Truck has 8k miles total. I did an oil change at 1500 and one at 7500. All done at the dealer.

I was thinking something inside the engine, but the noise doesn't increase with RPM and only is there after the truck idles for a while.

You can hear the cadence change in the 2 videos.

This sound is separate from the cleaning cycle, when the cleaning cycle starts at idle its much louder and sounds like every other Tacoma while in its cleaning cycle. This noise stayed while the louder cleaning cycle occurs.

i don't doubt what you hear and describe but, what i hear in the videos sounds normal. i do not hear a knocking noise or change of cadence. :notsure:

It's like a high-pitched fast paced tick. Coming from the driver side of the engine bay. If you turn the volume up you can hear it. It's much more consistent and faster in the first video. After 8 seconds when I zoom in you can really hear it.

Asking the same question, and if its the high pressure fuel pump, mine has 39K and since its certified have a appointment to see if it’s covered or needs attention.

Run it, it sounds fine. If you’re not sure run it harder until it reveals itself more.(if it’s truly an issue).

i cant hear anything. and if i do its probably the HPFP. i used to track noises like a crazy basement dwelling conspiracy theorist. just run it hard because if it was something internal it would fail catastrophically almost immediately to which then toyota owes you a new engine.

I’m still not convinced that the annoying tick/knock in the background is normal. At idle, the noise is happening at around 300 taps per minute (I roughly checked with a tempo tapping website), or half the engine rpm. The cams rotate at half the engine rpm. The noise definitely sounds like all the GM/chevy vehicles with lifter failures, but everyone keeps telling me it’s normal.

    Mine sounds exactly like yours

Here’s one with 200k+ miles and it’s not making the noise
    https://youtu.be/7OdUltqXEN0?si=DpsxcikVKguRIEaU

As for the high-pitched squealing noise I also hear in your video, I’m not sure. Mine makes the same noise occasionally, but not all the time. Seems like every time I park the truck it’s making a different, yet equally concerning noise. o_O

Your video sounds exactly like mine, when I stick my head in the right wheel well.

The second video you linked to, I didn't find any point in the video where they went into the wheel well like your video to listen close.

There are different things that make noise on this engine. The high pressure fuel pump, the cleaning cycle, and the vacuum pump (on all models that have it - not yours) all contribute to noise. My truck is at 40K miles with many of those at high rpm - sounds exactly the same as when I bought it, and sounds like the first video.

Sounds just like my 22 Sport. I thought it was ticking too, but since day 1 its been the same. My buddy has the exact same truck as mine and his is identical sounding, You're all good man.
