2021 MT with 38K dealer says I need new short block?

If they are trying to claim that pushing the clutch in has caused so much wear that the crank is "walking" and ruined the rear main seal, why not the front seal? I'd ask what the current clearance on the crank thrust is. Then again, most techs at dealerships aren't engine builders. They're just engine removal and installers, and probably lack the know how to actually check something like that. (Even though it's in the FSM, and really not all that difficult...well maybe a smidge difficult with the engine installed, but still).

Complete BS though. All I'd be able to do is laugh and probably lose my cool... I'm not all that good in those kinds of situations.

 

Wow! I've been driving MT 4x4 Toyota's since 1982, for an approximate 674,000 miles and I have never had that experience. Sometimes I hold the clutch in, sometimes I don't, and the dealer's explanation sounds an awful lot like BS to me.

 

Correct, and there would have to be so much damn crank end play the rods would be toast,
cylinder walls would be scored. It’s utterly and absolutely impossible

With pictures, and explanations, back and forth banter. Toyota wants to make sure it’s leaking.

If a crankshaft thrust bearing is worn you should be able to carefully pry/move the front crank pulley back and forth to determine endplay. I would think that if a bearing is so worn that the crank is rotating against the block surface you would have some noise and tremendous crankshaft endplay.

What lol this dealer is trying to screw you . How would they be able to even know how u use your clutch pedal at a light and no way in hell using your clutch pedal cause a rear main seal leak . I would have it towed to another dealer and file a complaint against that dealer .

 

I mean as long as you are not liable for tear-down hours I'd let them go for it. End play can be checked at the front of the crank so the trans should not come down. If they want to give you a free engine take it. Why not the only concern is they take the trans out and don't cover it.

 

OP: I call bullshit on their assessment. Does the owners manual state you cannot leave the transmission in gear with the clutch depressed? If it does not, they cannot blame you.

Drag them and don’t let them bully ya!

1) warranty (don’t pay a dime)
2) make them fly a tech out - repeat as necessary
3) go to a different dealer

Toyota took me on a 3 year bullshit ride that ended in them paying me $8,500 and no gag clause due to leaking timing chain cover, failing water pump, failed valve cover seals, this, that, and the other. They will bullshit you. They will blame you. Do not let them wear you down.

Now I get to do the rear water bypass pipe myself - which has failed - I reported several times under warranty and got kicked down the road.

If your dealer changes your oil - they may have overfilled something and blorped your seals out.

Make them put any promises in writing and make sure you make them document it all - not just “check and coolant was fine”

If your dealer seriously believe MT drivers hold the clutch in through a red light - time for a different dealer! (this is insane and how can they prove this? )

(for a laugh) My shitty dealer in the middle of it all tried to claim I had to purchase a new windshield (Platinum Warranty with glass coverage) - AND - for no reason kept my new tires and wheels for 8 months while my off road had some rando sport wheels!?

They will try it all.

 

Yeah, there is no way you are going to 'crack a block' by holding the clutch in. Thats just crazy $hit there.

 

Ok received a little more info from Roseville Toyota. Email response plus photos, and they double downed on the phone this morning flat out said it was my fault, and no where in the owners manual is this addressed.

“Here are the pics and vid of the crankshaft play and subsequent damage to components from excessive play in crankshaft thrust bearings.”

The video is an MP4, I’ll upload if I can figure out how but basically shows movement of the crankshaft.

You can google "crankwalk" which this is almost exactly it.

It was a plague on the 90's Eagle Talons and Mitsubishi Eclipses. Rarely was it found before warranty was up, so often the consumer was shit out of luck. It will eventually cause so much thrust play that it will eat up bearings and blow the engine.

More than likely what has happened as your crank thrust bearing spacing was whack from the factory and overtime the pulling nature due to the clutch caused this. Not improper driving.
