I have a 60 hp tractor with a loader and a wheeled skid steer. They both have their purpose, I use them about equally. If I had to choose only one, I would keep the tractor. A tracked skid steer would be a game changer though.

    THIS & THIS........

a good neighbor is worth a LOT of money. at the same time a good neighbor doesnt want your money..... but should always be offered.

well done on both of you!

now about that not having a tractor=== if you live rural & have a property to take care of? tractoring is a way of life. :)

with diesel costs 50 an hour is still a great price. i would love to buy a tractor but cant afford one. my 4x4 atv with trailer actually does most things i need.
if not my other 3 neighbors have- kubota excavator (moved/placed boulders), massey ferguson with box grate (does entire lane) and deere 3 series with box, post auger, and brush hog. (dug my pond and shaped creek bed).
guess i have it more than good.

What's up with Ariens these days. I bought an Ikon XL42 ZT because I wanted a quality machine that would last me a very long time. Almost right away I came across questionable engineering and design decisions, such as the engine oil drain that comes out over top of the drivetrain; essentially it is impossible to drain the oil without making a spectacular mess. I bought a suction tool. Thanks Ariens.

The latest thing that has me scratching my head is the battery. It never really turned over all that vigorously, and several times in cold weather I had to jump it. This season it was getting noticeably worse so I decided to change the battery. I was always curious as to why it was so small anyway.

    IMG_3353.jpg

I live near East Penn Manufacturing, which makes Deka batteries, and which has an outlet store on the factory grounds. I went over there with my dinky Ariens battery in hand and they matched it up and I walked out with a new one. Surprise! It was about as good at turning the engine over as the old one. So I checked out Ariens factory replacements and they're still selling the same little dinky thing I got from Deka (for more money).

After some more digging I discovered that the Ariens installed battery isn't really made for use in something like a garden tractor; it's made for use in power supplies, battery backups, that kind of thing. I can't even find a CCA rating anywhere -- because that's not what it was designed for.

BUT WAIT. Ariens holds this dinky little thing in place with a bracket, and on that bracket is a label.

    IMG_3357.jpg

Okay Ariens so what you're saying is, a person could replace the dinky, inadequate little battery with another one of the same size and output, OR a person could put a proper battery in there? As it turns out, yes a person can. However one has to first get a bunch of stuff out of the way and rearrange some other stuff, and then one has to re-invent the battery hold down because the dinky battery hold down no longer works. But, yay, the proper, adequately ampy battery does actually, eventually fit. Thanks Ariens.

I know Airens is the homeowner brand of Gravely, they have 3(maybe 4) product lines and they definatly range from low grade homeowner to heavy duty homeowner/light pro duty. I admittedly dont remember which product line is the heavy duty one though. One person on my street has the cheap one and it works for his 2 lot city yard but its clearly not made for heavy use.

What cc engine? Just about any twin will need 250-300 cold cranking battery. That 15/50 oil is thick and drags down a starter.
