My 1st post here on TW, although I have been searching the content here for a while, originally using CustomTacos but this forum seems to have more content... I'm certainly not a mechanic, but grew up in the 80s helping/watching my dad on his 70s Vintage dirt track race cars and forced to learn how to piece together my 1st cars if I wanted to drive...

I bought my 09 2TRFE Manual Trans Taco back in Nov 08, after rolling my 01 Taco breaking a lot of shit, right off the lot for about $25K! (sales guys were excited to report that they actually had a 2TRFE manual in stock!..like that should be an oddity...). Truck has 160K now but has been rock solid with no issues (that I didn't cause myself) over last 15 years. Never seen a mechanic or dealership except to replace recalled rear leaf springs.

I changed out the shocks and breaks 2 years ago and that was all it needed until the clutch started slipping a little at full acceleration. Also noticed a slight ticking/clacking noise under load but just hoped I was down to rivets on the clutch pad. I swapped clutch and flywheel but clacking was still there. Once the engine did a little surge at idle and I got an error code for crank positioning sensor, I shit my pants, parked it and ordered a timing chain replacement kit. Struggling through the crank pulley and timing cover removal, I finally get to see what damage I have caused...but I don't see shit...except for the expected wear at 160K. I see the crank/cam tensioner seems weak but that is all i see so far.

I'm really afraid that I jumped a tooth and trying to verify watching the timing sync markings. Moving the crank by hand, I'm watching the off-colored chain links and the timing sync marks but everything does not align when #1 is TDC (compression). As I continue to turn, the colored links seem to be moving forward 1 link per full cycle...is this correct? Trying to wrap my head around the mechanics of the sprockets... Anyway, saw a post from @pjturkey who understandable explained that current timing marks shouldn't matter, as long as everything is aligned at reassembly with #1 @ TDC (using the Haynes manual for reference).

Welp, back to the assembly line...it's winter time and I need my truck back...thanks for all the thorough write-ups i have seen so far!
