I’m starting to think the 4th gen is Toyotas last internal combustion engine tacoma, really hoping im wrong but I think the 4th gen will be the longest run generation Tacoma until the gasoline engine is completely phased out. Thoughts?

Possible. Toyota has scheduled the release of a BEV pickup by or in 2026. 4Th Gen Tacoma could be the last ICE version.

Toyota has indicated it is committed to Hybrids and Hydrogen for the next foreseeable future.

    https://www.kbb.com/car-news/report-toyota-can-build-90-hybrids-or-1-ev/

But what has to happen is the Tacoma needs to become a true hybrid for efficiency.

The Tacoma and Tundra are not considered efficient hybrids due to small battery capacity. They are used to help with performance and moderate gains in MPG.

Personally I just want the prices to calm down.

Forcing EV, HV or Hydrogen all results in bigger purchase prices. Everything is so damned expensive.

I get reduce reliance on non-renewables. But its getting silly when corollas are getting to 60k in canada.

9 states will ban new gasoline-powered vehicles in 2035. If a pure-EV 5th gen is introduced for 2035, then 4th gen will run for 2024-2034 or 11 years, same length as 2nd gen did (2005-2015).

^A lot can happen between now and 2035, improved battery technology, nuclear holocaust, Yellowstone eruption, humans walking on Mars...

I'd like to see how the electrical grids in those states fare if they really do ban ICE vehicles by 2035. In California this past summer when they announced bans on ICE vehicles one week and then the next week they were asking people to cut back on their Air Conditioning because the grid couldn't keep up. Can you imagine being told "sorry, you can't charge your truck today because it's to hot out"???

I think this will depend on the actual timeline for commercialization and manufacturing of the higher density / capacity / faster charging solid state batteries (along with infrastructure for the charging network, at least for US residents).

The way Toyota has been presenting it, they are about to leap frog over the competition. As the UK might utter, "the proof is in the pudding!"

I know right, 600+HP/700+ ft/lbs of torque all while getting 65+ MPGe is totally a fad.

Direct fuel injection motors were also totally a fad thing to have over a carbureted motor. Who would want the new fangled computers and electronics controlling my air/fuel ratio, give me a carb!

Smart phones and the internet were also a fad! Back in my day......

Smart phones had no good cheap alternative.

EVs are very expensive and very heavy and we keep getting told magically they won’t be either in 10 years.

Yeah back in my day i remember the Model T motor that got 20 HP. We kept getting told magically it would be more fuel efficient and more powerful in 10 years at the time. Technology surely doesn't advance rapidly at all!

Also, pagers existed before smart phones and competed with smart phones (the new tech), and it was just obvious which one was dramatically more capable....

EVs were around at the time of the model T, too. They’re an alternative to ICE at best.

The only thing Modern BEV's can't do that an ICE can is towing range under load and instantly filling up. Every other aspect of a BEV absolutely blows modern ICE motors out of the water in terms of efficiency and power produced.

Once economies of scale brings the price point to a competitive level of ICE (within the next decade) the writing is on the wall.

Once your $40k can get you a BEV with 600+HP and 65MPGe, or an ICE with 330 HP and 22 MPG and a lot more moving parts.....

$40,000 is not gonna get you a 600 hp Porsche EV. $40,000 is going to get you a cheap Chinese EV with 150 hp.
