How heavy are you?

I love my steel bumpers but Im just alittle worried now that I know how overweight I am now.

Hey Great advise. Although I'm still overweight empty. But now that Im empty Im gonna go through my gear again. Like you, I have spare cv and some parts. I also carry tools. I do my offroading in the mountains and since I'm always alone I feel better having more stuff to help me out of a jam. I'm running elka 2.5 dc with timbren active bumpstops and ubolt flip kit. Been thinking about the brakes as well but they don't feel too bad right now. This post was hopefully to see other people who wheel and are heavy and what has been braking or not (Hopefully not). I was planning to do the full conversion for overland camping cause its cheaper, but I might just go with a trailer instead to save on the weight.

With over 6000 lbs of towing capacity, the truck is plenty capable of starting and stopping the extra weight. It's just not necessarily designed to carry the extra weight on the frame / bed / rear axle. If i spent an hour or two digging I might be able to find you a build thread with a horror story about a bent axle housing and bent axles from being overloaded, but there are likely more fat asses like us who have posted here in this thread without catastrophic failure from running a few hundred pounds over gvwr for several years.

You could always go with a trailer and shift some weight onto another axle that you drop at camp or the trailhead, but personally i am still gonna carry my tools, fuel, water, and spare tire on the trail as they are no good to me sitting at camp if I need them.

I'd much rather be 6300 lbs with all my gear in the back then 5000 lbs towing a trailer of any weight.

I was in the boy scouts as young wipper snapper, so the "be prepared" motto stuck with me, but i tend to be over prepared most of the time, maybe not unlike you. I was sitting around the campfire a few weeks ago talking about gear and tools, trying to reduce weight, and acknowledging that I probably don't need two sets of metric wrenches, the slide hammer could replaced with a lighter crow bar or rope puller, and I don't need 5 gallons of gas for and overnight when I'm running a short 20 mile trail. The only time i ever needed extra gas was in canyonlands when the mileage we did over 4 days exceeded the range of a full tank of gas. There's probably 70lbs right there on a casual weekend trip that I don't need.

Camping with buddies? You dont need 4, camp stoves, three 20 gallon propane tanks, and two chainsaws. Talk to each other. I'm being a bit obnoxious with the examples but you get the point.

Regarding your rear suspension...you said elka 2.5 dcs...i assume those are your shocks but I was specifically curious what leaf springs you're running...if they are stock, Old man emu (dakar), Deaver, Alcan etc.

 

My sliders have saves me quite a few times. The relief after hearing the crunch on a rock and looking down at your steel sliders lol.

There's someone on here with a Tacoma with a flatbed and a FWC. They are around 7800 I believe. Possibly even in the 7900 range.

My OME leafs were bending flat and couldn't handle the weight much longer.

 

Ome is garbage. Pretty sure they make their leaf springs with 90% recycled plastic and the rest is silly puddy. Don't know much about dobinsons, but haven't heard any bitching so if you're off your bumps and not bottoming out and it's a pleasant ride, keep it the way it is.

I went through dakars, an $800 set of custom alcans that did the job, and finally bit the bullet for a chevy 63 setup. I was pleased with my alcans, but wanted 14" shocks and the alcans couldn't do it which is why I went to the chevys.

Many options out there but I wouldn't stress about the few hundred extra pounds. The fact that you're on here asking the questions is a good indication that it's on your mind when you're behind the wheel, which is what matters, IMO.

 

One lb is about 4.448 Newtons. Nice thing about being on Earth is that gravity is reasonably uniform, so pounds force versus mass don’t matter that much.
If you do anything more technical that discussing trucks or Moms, it’s much simpler to work with Newtons.
If you’ve seen that hot photo of Taylor Swift and Blake Lively that’s going around; that’s what one kilonewton looks like.

Not a frame, but bed mounts-- the around the world Tacoma thread, they've had at least 2 breakdowns from the OEM bed mounts failing, though I believe both also attributed to bolts loosening and parts were slamming against each other, which then caused the mounts to crack off the frame

5860 loaded to the gills with the dog and everything I owned. 3120 trailer (no H20 but fully stocked gally). This was before the winch and winch bumper, ditch lights and bumper lights so I'm probably a few hundred pounds heavier on the steer axle these days. Should get her weighed again.

OK fine, i'll play. To prove I am only partially full of shit...I guess I exaggerated a little since I claimed to be 6300 lbs. Wish I had taken a picture of the bed that day. I didn't weigh front and rear separately, just the truck in total.

March 2019 was the date.



I am actually scared to weigh my truck again because I may have shed enough weight to drop below 6000 lbs, in which case I am no longer 3 tons of fun

Found another pic. This is where I was riding with archive garage shackle flip on the HD dakars trying their hardest to support the weight. I ran the 2" bump stop drop to prevent too much negative arch with the shackle flip. Pretty much flat.

 

Outside Inuvik on my cannonball run to Tuktoyuktuk in 2019. Converts to 6217lbs with a fairly lightweight armor and camping package and me and my dog in the cab.

 

5'8" at about 235lbs.
