I learned something from the attached video. I was not aware new/unused oil had a contamination level that wasn’t ZERO. The best high flow filters available for our trucks can filter down to around 18-20 microns I believe. I’m considering filtering the new oil through my bench setup that has a 2 micron Bypass filter.

Lol, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard this year

Prefilter brand new oil. You got too much time on your hands

ETA: sounds rude, so sorry, but I guess not that sorry because I’m leaving the comment

    I like the idea IF!

You plan on drinking it, cooking with it or using it as a sexual lubricant. :D

Aren't you the guy that changes his oil every 500 miles?

So... filter out all the additives and make it pure oil? Cool... please report back.

Hey wait.... don't you already remove your oil once a month to filter it and run it through a magnet? I remember a post about that somewhere... a quibble tip or something like that...

All that work, and a year later you discover your engine still needs to come out for a timing cover leak or worse, a cam tower leak

You know what oil 99% of Tacoma owners use? Bulk hose #3 hanging from the ceiling at the dealer's Express Lube lane.

Do not encourage these clowns. Two oil change threads in two days ... there should be a sub-Dumbgeon that these are routed to immediately.

Guess I’m not making it home from South America. I’ve been using non standard oil because it’s all I can find. And that just has to be full of bad nasty stuff that’s going to ruin my engine because it isn’t Mobil 1, Red Line, or any other top shelf brand.

Guess I’ll drop a latitude and longitude and do a seek and find part out….pffffft

Wonder if @bigoldbeef has been pre filtering new oil and that’s how he is over 350k miles….

Yes it’s sarcastic. Meant to be. I’ll continue on my journey using the wrong oil, mixing viscosities, mixing brands, and synth and dino together. I’ll keep enjoying life my Tacoma and South America while others worry about new oil being dirty and bad for your engine.

Maybe worry about what’s in the water you drink the food you eat or the meds you take. Less stress and you’ll live longer.

As a millwright we have filter carts we pass the fluids through.

But I wouldn’t waste my time at home for a truck oil change. More dirts likely to fall off the hood into the oil cap.

Did the oil's mouthfeel change at all before and after the prefiltering?

Lol correct. And, the engine oil system is an open system, not a closed system. It has a dipstick for fucks sake. Close the system and add a sight glass and we can start talking about decent cleanliness. Current way? 10-15 micron is best you can do no matter what you do.

You know the old saying: “Ignorance is bliss”.
Sometimes too much info is just that, too much.
If you think about it, most premium filters today boast a 20 micron filtration media. So if you’re worried about the 5-10 micron stuff that’s getting throughout you won’t sleep very well.
Add this: Your diffs, manual transmission and transfer case have no filtration. There are lots of automatic transmissions that use a screen, not a filter.
Remember that oil lubricates as a film.
Don’t overthink it. A 20 micron particle is approximately .79 thousands of an inch.
Ok so math nerds can check this but that’s .00079in. Too small for me to worry.

    I'm not following.

we are worried about the initial bit of oil on the outflow side of the filter, by prefilling an oil filter?
