Extension for alternator and fuel pump wiring harness

    Hey all,

    I've got a bit of an issue i need to solve and am lookung for suggestions or part numbers.

    Short version:

    I need to extend the wiring harness for my alternator and fuel pump. In order to do so i need either a plug and play extension harness for both or i need to know the part numbers for male and female plug ends for both harnesses which im having trouble finding.

    Long version:

    I've just bought a new 23 tacoma sr5 and have installed a mobile ham radio setup in it. It works but its very noisy, i need to reduce the ammount of noise the truck is putting into my radio system.

    One issue is deffinitly the alternator. Alternator noise is very distinct- sounds like a motorboat and increases in frequency and pitch as the vehicle increases speed. I've also heard folks online say that the fuel pump creates alot of rf noise aswell.

    This noise is radiated off of the respective wiring harness where its then picked up by my antenna or coax feeding the antenna.

    The way to fix the issue is to wrap each respective wiring harness through a torroid core as close to the respective devices/components as possible. This will cause an impedance spike and prevent the unwanted rf from traveling down the harness and being radiated.

    Problem is the harness will need several wraps which is gonna reduce the length of the harness by as much as a foot which is gonna make the harnesses too short. Additionaly i do t realy wanna make modifications on the stock harnesses.

    So i wanna get a 2' extension for both harnesses so i can put the torroids on the extension then plug one end of the extension into the stock harness and the other end into the component.

    I've tried looking up extensions but seems like they dont exist, so at this point im looking for what male and female plug ends and what crimpers/pins im gonna need in order to build my own extensions.

    If anyone one has this info or know where i can find it, i'd be very grateful!

    @daveeasa I think is the resident guru that makes harnesses for headlights, he may be able to make or assist.

    I suspect you’re in need of a longer power cable not signal harness? Seems to me that the power cable, being high current, would generate substantial RF.

    there are some big 3 kits and also dc machinist but I forget where he was with third gen Tacoma.

    If you truly desire a signal cable extension then there is typically a 5 digit Toyota part number stamped in. That, and/or a photo and Google image search can often track them down.

    I’m familiar with an oval 3 way and a square 4 way from my FGT sequoia alternator swap but haven’t looked at this in my 3rd gen yet.

    no idea on fuel pump connectors but the same advice as above. Locate the number or post a photo.

    Old Icom 706 HF been in the Tacoma for years zero issues. The Icom cables are designed for length it's not a guess. I have 3 radios HF, 2 and 440 and a 220. I would suggest toroid's on your power cables as a start. Modern vehicles are pretty good at noise suppression in their wiring. Run the radio cables directly to the battery no where else.

    As @daveeasa said I would also suggest doing a big 3 or big 4 upgrade and upgrade your ground and power wires. Alrrrnator whine is a grounding/power issue 9/10 times. I’d do 4 gauge minimum on wiring and use marine wire if you want to only do it once with marine lugs

    The power cable to an HF rig is a #10 wire, the stock wire length is cut to match the load. The radio full smoke draws less than the cable is capable of, If any thing cut it as short as needed, the shorter the run the lower chance of noise. Wire it directly to the battery. 3 radios in my 2011 zero noise on any band. All of my antennas are on the bed of the truck this not only helps with noise it also helps with reflections from the truck body work. Been playing with ham radios for over 30 years.
