    Hello all,

Can anyone help identify why this sound might be coming from the front right.

I would like to buy this as a work truck and the truck drives fine, shifts fine, the only thing worrying me is this noise.

My best guesses are either the catalytic converter or maybe something as simple as the brake dust shield.

    Would appreciate some feedback.

    Thank you.

I can't play the video b/c it is private but it sounds characteristic of the catalytic converter heat shield; there is a clamp in there that rusts and causes the entire thing to rattle and buzz, and drone at certain RPMs.

Most likely what @whiteknight4x4 said, very common.
Take it off, throw it away. Lots of folks run without one, I do.

Yep sounds like that heat shield. It's a 4 banger right?

Yeah that's what I would say it is. Nothing to worry about. 108k miles it's not even broken in

If it holds up for 3 or 4 years I'm happy. Obviously there will be regular maintenance fixes.

I don't know if it's the same for the 4cyl, but on the 1GR-FE equipped Tacomas, you can get a similar rattling/buzzing from the catalytic converter support brackets - they tend to rust out where the cats attach to them and vibrate in place, typically in drive at certain speeds, and stopping abruptly if you put it in park.

You can check if this is the case by wiggling the cat (while it's cold, let it sit for several hours at least) and looking at where it bolts to the vertical support.

The supports are not expensive or necessarily difficult to replace, but if they are rusted out that way you can absolutely bet that the bolt and nut holding the cat on is rusted out, and they can be a really shitty job to get out, and the bolt hole on the flange on the cat will also often be toast by that point.

    *Update*

Took it the my local mechanic and it turned out to be the catalytic converter heat shield like we all anticipated. Thank you all for the replies and input. The noise is gone.
