I'm in the process of purchasing second gen 2012 access cab long bed. I'm looking for a solution that enables me to carry heavy lumber on a rack, my canoe occasionally, and some kind of covered and locked storage. The racks that mount to caps are not heavy duty enough for me I'd be ok with tonneau or shell. I've had both and there's pros and cons to both for me. Id also like the setup to be somewhat removable, particularly if its a shell, since I use the truck for firewooding and some landscaping stuff as well where its easiest to have it all the way off.

Right now I'm thinking of going with a classic heavy duty steel lumber rack that integrates with a camper shell or a tonneau cover. I know people have waterproofing issues with the rack and cap combo so if you have any tips there let me know.

I also have no idea where to go about buying this stuff so I'm taking recs for that as well.

    Show me what you got!

You'll run out of payload way before you need a lumber rack for firewood. For lumber like 2x4s and such I'd just flag the ends and have the tailgate down if pickup up more than just a few, but if it's only a few I'd kitty corner it with the tailgate close and flag the end.

As for enclosed cap, I would look at the GFC shell. Beefy, but still light enough to remove, and you can put bars on the top to haul anything else you'd like. Just my 2 pennies.

Thanks. @50Buck. Sorry if my post was confusing. The lumber rack is not for firewood. I'd like to be able to take it off occasionally to move firewood around without a rack or cap. 2x lumber I can make do up to 12' with no mods. My preferred method for 16' lumber and my canoe is with a headache rack and the other side resting on the tailgate (closed), as it makes the angle less extreme.

Id like a lumber rack to be able to grab 10 sheets of ply and or heavy timbers 12-20' long. I'll check out the GFC shell. Thanks

Be warned, the GFC shell is not cheap, but neither are any of the others you'll see.

You weren't kidding about them not being cheap. Definitely top of the line though. Thanks for the rec.

They are spendy, but made in America and beefy. I briefly considered a shell for my Tundra and it was similarly priced if you wanted the reinforced roof for hauling stuff up top.

Another funny thing about the GFC shells outside of their hilarious price, I don't see a single one on their website pictured on a 6' bed. When I went to price one out it didn't even ask about bed length. I assume if I were to go through with an order someone would reach out and ask?

    Not sure.

Here's a pic of one on a 6 foot bed though.
