Yea those little Mustangs were fast. My first patrol car was a 1969 Chevrolet 2 Dr Biscayne with a 427 under the hood. That was the fastest patrol car I had in 44 years.

 

Funny -somewhat related story- guy in the class ahead of me in HS had a '69 Chevelle SS with a 454 and 4.11 rear end in it, pretty quick car. But the state trooper who lived in town had a 460 Interceptor in his work car that he "massaged" in his spare time. You might loose him on some twisty back roads but you definitely weren't going to outrun him on the interstate - which is what the bonehead in the Chevelle tried to do. Engine grenaded and all he had to show for it was a pretty piece of paper the trooper handed him on the side of the road.

Obligatory pics - saw this in the WallyWorld parking lot - talked to the owner for just a few. guy said he has owned this for 30+ years and it is his daily driver.

 

I got a 100 mph ticket in my raked go fast 71' cutlass. I was going home from work one night in 79'. I was balls out and probably closer to 120 mph. All I got was questioned (where are you going/coming from) and a $100 ticket.

Could you imagine that today. Minimum cuffed arrested, liscense revoked ad car seized

 

It is definitely a different world today.

 

Judges were cooler back then. They weren't trying to make criminals like they do today.

I had a chase with Highway Patrol on the freeway and lost them. In those days they were driving Big Dodges with 440s and according to them they would do a reliable 140. But my car was hot and as soon as I lost them in my rear view I got off an exit and parked in a residential circle to cool down. We waited a half hour and came out of the circle to see headlights coming up the street toward us. I turned down to go past them and it was a county cop. I couldn't outrun them in the curves so I pulled around the corner to let my buddy out to run... and waited for the cop to pull up behind me. Before they towed the car away eight other cops, county, city, and Highway Patrol showed up. They all wanted me to pop the hood and we had a good time talking cars. The ticket was exhibition acceleration, reckless driving, and clocked at 140+ in a 70 zone. Minimum fine for speed was $5 per mile over the limit.

When I got to court I told the judge that I'd never seen the Patrol behind me and was just trying to outrun some guys throwing beer cans. He looked at me, and said... "So you were speeding?" I said, "Yes, your Honor." And he said, "Twenty bucks.", and rapped his gavel on the bench. It cost me more to get the car out of impound than the ticket ran.

 

Damn, not trying to stand on a saint soap box and I'm making no excusses for being 18 and speeding. but the moral of my story I'd say I walked away with a new respect for the law and that particular officer. I needed a consequence.

There are good cops and bad cops. The smart ones can read the scenario and not abuse thier power. Its the last post that most likely has prompted alot of the change in attitude and outcome.

It was different times. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have my grandkids grow up in those times as opposed to today. The bright screen obsession and the lack of humor really worry me.

A lot of the older cops I knew said the 75-79 Nova was their favorite patrol car.
