You guys know my rap and I’m not going to repeat the same stuff over and over, but I do want to share some pics with you. I will say that my engine has just under 7300 miles. First oil extraction at 200 miles, 2nd at 750 miles, 3rd at 5000k miles, and first oil filter today. Liqui Moly CeraTec at 1000k miles.

I’m not sure if you all have seen others post their oil filter pics with tons of metal fragments at the bottom of the canister, this is mine. I hope now you guys understand why I beat this drum.

The chips will be between the pleats…..not in the filter canister

While you oil change frequency to me seems extremely excessive. I don’t slight anyone for what they do or don’t do in life. My experience has been different and to my knowledge haven’t seen any metallic shavings . I’m glad you caught it however. Good luck and hope their isn’t any bigger issues.

I mean technically…… if you really wanted to think about it deeply and be scientific about it , you would then ask the next question what does this mean and what will it really affect ? Sure our knee-jerk reaction is oh metal bad, engine seized , bad bad bad. But is that really what would happen ? Maybe you’ve never changed the oil on a vehicle that had an exposed paper style filter where you can actually see in between the canister and outer filter . Maybe every single oil change on every car ever would look the exact same if you had the same level of scrutiny, and had access to the paper side. Like have you ever hacked sawed open the metal disposable oil filters on other vehicles? Perhaps they too contain these small fragments of metal it’s just you have never noticed it until now. Basically, you think ya just out smarted Toyotas engineers ? Gottem right ? What should you do now ? Motor swap ? Apply for lemon law? or maybe install quadruple oil filtration system on your engine so you don’t have to see those flakes ? What the take away here ? Keep an eye out for the completely expected and mundane events of life? Just saying.

Actually I’m still very curious , so besides the scary looking flakes you see , is there any like tangible real evidence that damage has occurred in your engine? do you notice a loss of power /fuel economy? Perhaps now there is an odd vibration or sound indicating damage has occurred? Basically, besides your own imagination, is there anything in objective reality which backs up your suspicions?
also I would say generally speaking you probably have a stock truck just like hundreds of thousands of owners. You don’t reckon with all those data points and all the Tacoma’s on the roads for all these years no one has realized this? I mean motor should start failing left and right assuming basically people only change oil 10,000 miles and use a paper filter right? so like logically those trucks that follow the manual , they should be dropping like flies left and right right or at least at rates significantly higher than people who change oil every 500 miles and use only the finest, vintage oils? Just trying to follow the “logic” here.

My old rav4 has 340k miles on the original engine
It went two years without an oil change, ran bone dry multiple times since 2009
It is now owned by my brother. He hasn’t changed the oil since I last did in 2020
Has that filter rusted on, and it just gets topped off whenever he visits my dad

you’ll probably have more in oil changes than the rav4 has in maintenance since our family has owned it

just change the oil and it won’t blow up, or don’t. It probably still won’t blow up

    Didn't happen.
You may have run it below the dipstick, but you'd have only run it bone dry once..

    My rebuttal to this statement:IMG_8939.jpg

First oil change 900 miles January 18,2023. About to pass 70k miles while headed to Santiago Chile. Just use fresh oil. Numbers on the bottle up to 10/40 have been good.

I will never forgive Toyota for this re-useable housing filter horseshit. I have it on my 2019 Horunner and it's an ENORMOUS pain in the ass.

Just traded in my 4th gen 4Runner to find they'd taken the spin off filter from up top and hidden a cannister down under two skids on the bottom of for all intents and purposes was the same engine on the 5th gen. Had to go through a stripped skid bolt to get to it.

wife has a 5th gen 4runner. IMO the canister design is easy peasy if you dont overtighten it. The pain in the ass on her ride is all the skid plates

The filter housing on the 3G Tacoma is not traditional in the sense of the vehicles I've owned:

    1993 Isuzu Rodeo (New)
    1996 Honda Accord LX (New)
    2003 Honda Pilot EX (New)
    2010 Mazda CX-9 (Used)

All the above had disposable filters as opposed to 3rd Gen Tacoma's replacing the filter inside the housing unit.

It took a second try to get comfortable with the process...I added Fumoto Valve in addition to replacing plastic housing with aluminum.

Imagine owning two such vehicles... :anonymous: At least the filter wrench is the same size.
