You could use flat 1/8" flat aluminum across grain. Just slot the holes for expanse/contraction if using glue up boards

Well I got pulled away from the bench build for awhile with family and other projects but I'm back at it. So after work today it was down to the shop.
I ran all the stock for the leg end cross stretchers through the jointer on 2 sides.
    20231206_174241.jpg
One board had a pretty big bark inclusion so I cleaned it out and filled it with epoxy. It won't be seen because it will be used in the center of a glue up.
    20231206_174251.jpg
And of course I filled the dust collector drum again, so I emptied that while I was at it.
    20231206_174305.jpg
Next I'll run the 4 ugliest pieces through the planer so the 2 flat surfaces will be parallel for the glue ups.
Those will be used in the center of the glue ups and will be pretty much hidden.

Started the glue ups for the leg cross stretchers. Ugly board will be planed away or cut off, it will go on the ground and won't be seen.

Glue squeezing out a knot means good clamp pressure, lol.

I'd think aluminum could be even over kill. Hardwood perpendicular to the top should hold fine, and if placed right would prevent the shelf from sliding left and right across the sink.

Think like the gussets found inside a wood hope chest. Gusset isn't the correct word, but for the life of me I can't think of it now, and the old google doesn't help you when your brain won't word the words.

You could use a hand planer too, bring it down until you get the character back, a little more control but it’ll just take a bit longer.

I think I'll just use the drum sander to keep it flat but thank you for the alternative idea!

Thought about that too. But the grain directions would be running opposite of each other.

I would just make it thick, like 1 1/2" I have one I use as a cutting board over my sink and it has remained flat. It's not as wide as the one you are about to build but I don't really think it would be a huge issue.

She wants it to be 36” x 20”. That would be pretty heavy.

    Looks really good!

I meant more than just square tube and welding.

Maybe, but if you want it to stay flat? 5/4 would do as well.

I'm definitely still a n00b with metal , so I'm keeping it simple.

No way dude, your execution was awesome and that's a beautiful piece I didn't mean it that way

I meant, I'd love a local to do a hardwood top, or background piece, or more for stuff I'd cut on CNC or fabricate

    Love that industrial look
