This brings up a thought. that recommends filters every-other change. Am I the weird one that always does filters on every oil change? Or do other folks do that, too? Reusing/leaving a filter seems like putting on a dirty pair of undies after taking a shower.

I say it depends. If I was doing lots of miles a year id be doing every other, otherwise when oil on things is getting changed close to once a year ill change the filter as well.

As long as the motor is in good health and not creating tons of filterable deposits, and you are using a quality filter the filter wont clog up before 2 or more oil changes.

I’ve always changed the filter out with the oil, they’re cheap enough that the extra few dollars doesn’t make a big dent in my wallet for the peace of mind it provides.

You don't turn them inside out?

I've always just changed the filter with oil. It's cheap insurance.

That's interesting manual recommends oil changes every 4k. I would have expected longer intervals

I always change the filter out with oil changes. Or if I'm feeling lazy I tell my shop to do so lol. The cost is well worth the extra peace of mind.

Yeah I feel kind of bad extending my oil changes to 5k on the Versys. I dont think that caused my engine failure but I wont be running oil that long anymore.

I believe it's a combination of things that dictate that 4k interval.

Mainly the bevel gear shaft drive final output paired with larger spaced out torque impulses of a parallel twin that likes to chew through oil.

As well as age. The bike came out in 2010 when synthetics and oil technology was not as advanced. Aboutthe only thing that's been updated from a lubrication perspective is the recommendation to use the Yamaha final drive oil (same in vmax and FJR) as Yamaha saw frothing being a problem with regular gear oils at higher speeds.

Also to put things into perspective. @ 4k mile OCI with all of 3.7 (I just dump in 4) quarts of oil to lubricate an engine that's spinning 4k rpms to do 70 AND a transmission... That's not far out of line from say a 2nd Gen Tacoma and most normal vehicles. Who's OCI is 5k miles (which needs 2k rpms to do 70) and uses 5 quarts of oil to lube JUST a motor.

Ya know you are right. I change the filter on everything damn near Everytime because of exactly that. Cheap insurance.

The ONLY thing I don't is my dirtbike which I about half the OCI because of it's use case.

So I did a few things after work today. I went and checked out a dealer that had a cb500f,cbr500r and a ninja 400. Now I’ve already sat on a ninja 400 and thought it was snug but was overall fine but was smaller in height and length. At first and tbh still don’t have much of an issue with it but after checking out both the cb and cbr I see it’s a rather tight bike and much prefer how the cbr not only looks but how it feels when you sit on it (plus the cbr has a better rear seat). So I’ll most likely end up with a cbr500r sometime this next year. Cb was nice but not exactly what I want tbh. I also finished my work bench and got rid of the old turd that I was using haha but I repurposed it into a oil shelf so still useful.

    not sure on colors thou
    IMG_3604.jpg
    much wider rear seat

old bench is in the left corner but it uset have some plywood screwed down to make it larger

Kind of digging the look of the Arrow exhaust on the CB. If I ever pipe mine, I think that’s the route I will go.

All this CB talk is really making me miss my CB1000R. :(

Also, the Super Tenere has a 6 gallon fuel tank but I’m not even getting 40 mpg so my range still isn’t great lol. It would probably help if I stopped accelerating so hard and cruising at 85+ mph but the power and torque are so addicting. I'm hoping I’ll pick up a few MPG with the new tires, which I’ll probably install on Friday.

My Tuono is almost as bad as the Tacoma, it gets 16~mpg. The price you pay for power

Those bigger motors like their fuel. Speed makes a big difference in your mileage on a larger bike. On the FJR something as simple as my windshield adjustment can make a 2-3 mpg difference. When I've traveled with my friend Hugh he can consistently get 20 more miles per tank than me. He runs a slightly smaller windscreen and runs it in a lower position which decreases drag. I've experimented with that now on my own bike and when the weather is warmer I now run the windscreen lower than I used to and have been surprised at just how much difference it makes. My normal cruising speed is about 74 mph around here where the speed limit is typically 65. AT that rate I get 42-43 mpg.

The high speed cruising is what gets ya. Stock tune on the US bikes go out of closed loop fueling at like 4100 rpm and start richening fuel mixture past that point from stoichiometric. This is right around 72-73mph indicated. You can watch this shift by setting cruise on a nice flat road at 72 and then bump it up to 75 and watch the indicated mpg drop like 3-5mpg

Also, the range till empty and mpg calculations are wildly inaccurate I have found.

I have an "Anthony" flashed ECU on my bike, but TBH I wish I did a little more research and spent a little bit more n went with the power vision and tuned it myself as older versions of the software allowed for adjusting when the bike is in closed loop and targeted afrs etc. But, overall I get around 40mpg so can't complain (my tuned ECU didn't change anything that would effect mpg)
