ECU Tune and Failed Emissions Testing Experience

The only approved CARB Tune for our Taco's is the Magnuson Super Charger Tune - so yes for the NA Taco's you are correct. I had no issues the emissions test here is CO on my SC Taco - they plugged it in, read the ECU from the OBD, tested the gas cap, took my money, gave me a printout of the results and sent me on my way.

 

If any of you guys are needing or looking for an ECU, for any reason, check car-part.com. I got mine locally for $175 from a junkyard that I found via that website. Waaaay cheaper than buying from the dealer.


They are a bit cheaper on eBay but I needed one asap (bricked ECU - different story lol).

 

Just because it is on the list does not mean it checks for that, Pennsylvania is also on the list and I have run emissions on multiple tuned vehicles and never had an issue. None of them were a Tacoma but I imagine based off the discussion that any tune with any software on any vehicle will alter the data enough to throw a red flag for any test equipment that checks for it. I have even had vehicles with minor changes that required a tuner such as GM trucks disabling the variable displacement system that cancels cylinders and they passed right through.

 

This applies to the AT guys...6MT, prepare to pay the price of having a relatively rare configuration, gonna have to hunt a bit if you want used (or go new if you need one in a hurry), they're hard to come by (at least MY21+). I know first hand, for reasons...

Colorado - Magnuson Tune Version 7 is the last one I flashed that they provided. SC tunes are also available from Tuners too. Just saying. Magnuson uses VFTuner Software for their tunes which are CARB approved. Tuners use the same SW. Toyota does not use VFTuner Software for their tunes - the root of the problem.

 

I’m on the yotawerx stryker tune with my magnuson. didn’t know all the above info, that’s why I’m asking and researching before I have to go in for my smog here in California.

Makes me feel confident when I go out shopping for my tune next year.

 

We could argue that the stock files should have always been this way but the good news is that's happening now for all of them.....confidence indeed!!

 

I got my '19 smogged for a sale a couple weeks ago (dont think i needed it but did it anyway) with a KDMAX Pro tune, no issues, same as @GoldenBrew, plugged in, tested gas cap, took money and sent me on my way with a passing grade in Colorado. Curious why that would be...

 

If it’s like California, not all smog check stations have the newest computers and software to check CVN from customers vehicles.

AZ requires testing after the vehicle reaches 5 years old. Then it's every 2 years after that and once again before sale if sold private party. AZ is very loose with emissions testing requirements. As long as no codes are present AZ doesn't care if the ECU has been flashed. You have nothing to worry about.

 

What should someone in Cali on kdmax consider?

 

Simple. Reflash back to OG (stock tune). Your tuner should be able to hook you up .
