Well I racked my brain and did some observing, even replacing the oil filter, I finally gave in and took it to the shop, I was told the oil filter housing must be replaced, anyone here replaced theirs? I'm lookin at some YouTube videos but they're for the 3rd Gen Tacomas.

Not true. I had a blown head gasket and the first symptom was exhaust bubbles in the coolant reservoir and a cylinder 6 misfire.

I'd be surprised if the entire housing needed replacement. Probably just a bad seal.

My guess you didn't pull the little plug under the filter housing when the filter was changed to drain it.

So I'd have to take it to stealership and get it replaced there more than likely because Mavis won't do it, I looked up the price for the housing it's $125 on sale, just need to see if it's something I could replace myself so hoping someone here has run into that problem and replaced theirs.

It's better to search by engine model. The 4.0 is a 1GR-FE

Thank you, just watched the video, so it's the replacement of the housing I have to do correct? Not the first part of the video?

That's where I'm at a loss about, maybe a part that wears out overtime tightening and loosening the oil filters over the years? I hate to take my vehicle to shops to get worked on because i don't trust people with my vehicles, but I may need to do it this time around since I can't seem to find any tutorials on replacing the oil filter housing on youtube or anywhere else.

IMHO slow down before getting replacement part. I would advise replacing oil filter after you completely clean and inspect mating surface and surrounding area with Brake Clean. Start motor and see if leak reappears, something tells me it won't. Be sure to look for double gasketing.

What "little plug"? I have the hole in/under the filter lame catch baffle/channel, but no little part/plug and it makes a mess that tries to head right for the alternator when I pull the filter.

Any part number? I have the part number for the little gas door bumpers that are always missing: I'll trade ya. ;)

A reasonably priced product you can use to safely degrease/oil your engine bay is simple green pro xd, which you can get at a big box store (home depot, ect.) I believe I got referred it via BITOG, though I'd been using regular simple green already for quite a few years when cleaning small motor carburetors. I only just got to try the pro xd version while doing the timing chain on our taco (in my thread "used tacoma, sludged engine").

Dude, it worked. I mixed it with tap water in a pump spray bottle which conveniently had ratio marks on it for mixing cleaners. I think I went with 3:1 water to cleaner, and I just sprayed the whole bay and let it sit 10 or so minutes, hosed it off. Off with it came all the oil residue from old leaks. I felt like I was in a commercial.

It wasn't like I went over everything with my trusty toothbrush, but it was as clean as I'd ever care to make an engine bay, and with no work besides a hot forearm from squeezing the bottle trigger for 15-20mins trying to get it EVERYWHERE.

I'd recommend against using carb/brake cleaner. You can, and it works quick and even more easily, but I understand the solvents therein to be bad for plastic/rubber, so I really only do that if I'm pissed off at a lawn mower.

Any casting can crack. However, I’d agree that requiring return of the old part is a good idea since it’s not unheard of for shops to replace parts rather than simply clean off a bad gasket.

Simple Green is a great general purpose cleaner. To maintain my engine bay I put a weak solution in a bottle, spray it everywhere, and follow it up with a plain water spray bottle rinse. Never needed a garden hose spray and I also can avoid directly spraying all of the electrical connectors. When it gets dusty, I use Lemon Pledge on everything and wipe down with a clean shop rag and a small natural bristle paint brush. The nice thing about using it, (LP) is that it gradually evaporates away so there is no buildup over time.

@Williston Your engine bay looks amazing! I'll have to see about rotating in some of your tricks for sure.

Here's my before and after shots from my above post, spray and rinse. I can't stress enough how stoked I am on the results for the clear fluid reservoirs.

Thank you. Yours looks nice!! The 2.7 4cyl is a real challenge. No place to hide with a mail-it-in detail. The 4.0L cheats a bit and hides a lot of the clutter and chaos under the nice engine cover. I brush it off under the cover every once in a while, but that's it. There's never any oil film under there, so nothing to see.
You missed some leaves. Get rid of them ;) :pccoffee:
