After all the outside work I had just one furnace project goal - to get the gas line run through the crawlspace.

Should be EZ, run the snake in from the outside. Target spotted.

    KIMG3679.jpg

    Need to grab it.
A piece of utility wire on a tape measure.

    KIMG3683.jpg

Tape a rope to the snake.

    KIMG3684.jpg

And go outside and pull. Everything should work fine - right??

    ... Or not ...

Regular readers may remember the theft and subsequent recovery of my hole saw from the evil crawlspace :drevil: as well as the ordeal of drilling through the wall in a 6" wide space at ground level...

Well it turns out that :censored: crawlspace had one more trick left in the magic bag.

I was all pleased with myself, I had foamed a nice pipe sleeve in the hole and thought running the gas line would be a non issue.
    Yeah, right...

It seems directly in front of the hard won hole there was another piece of wood just inches away, no way the gas line was going to clear... At this point I said :censored:, :censored: & :censored: too.

    Now it is personal. :infantry:

    ... several hours later ...

Though the judicious application of a variety of power & hand tools, hard headed perseverance of an angry old guy and a generous amount of swearing with great sincerity there is now a hole of sufficient proportions to fit the gas line without trouble... :D

Apparently the wall in that location is about 19" thick ;) , I never thought rotten wood could have so much integrity...
I'm surprised that wooden boats ever sink.

With the assistance of Mrs Green we now have a gas line to the basement.

    KIMG3686.jpg

So there, mess with me will ya...

    Good morning everyone :hattip:

Nasty storms guessed for these parts over the next couple of days. The report starts off with “heavy wet snow” and includes a couple of “rain” references… I hate heavy wet snow… That and ice storms are the only winter things you’ll find me complaining about…

But all of that won’t get in the way of …

I hope you have a pleasant Sunday

Years ago, me an my dad built a 4x100 belt sander. Basically a clone of this.

    VBM4X132-RP_1.jpg

we cast the housing for the belt tensioner out of bronze since our little foundry could not do cast iron at the time, and dad LOVED casting bronze. however during the pattern building process the inner bore came out wrong, either that we found the bigger inner pipe Later, don't recall 100%, but the inner core was 4" and 23 needed to be 4.5".

no lathe, no mill, but we did have a drill press. An I came up with the idea of using a 4.5" grinding wheel chucked up on a bolt to fit in the chuck of the drill press. it worked really well, nice smooth bore. but one MAJOR problem. it was a :censored: pain to stand there an babysit the drill press quill. Sooo being a bit creative I rigged up a rope and a gallon jug of water to the handle of the drill press pulled down, It took a bit of fiddling to get it just right, how much water and where the rope was on the handles. but it worked very well, and let me walk away to do other things, came back about every 30 minutes to check and read just the as needed.

we ended up increasing the bore size from 4" to 4.5" nice smooth walls and the cuttings where super fine almost like flour.

Waiting for the we have heat !!!

Did you rebuild the combustion chamber and redo the insulation? While it was easy to access.

The furnace is a low hour takeout in very good condition. Being gas fired with modern inshot burners and a tube style heat exchanger it doesn't have a combustion chamber lining like an oil furnace.

For those not fluent in furnace speak:

    Inshot style gas burner:
The gas is jetted from the black tube in the foreground into the burner tubes (heat exchanger), there is a small fan on the exhaust end called an inducer.

    Furnace-Burners-2-compress.jpg

Here is an example of a modern style gas fired heat exchanger.
The fire blows in the top (remember it is being pulled by the inducer) heating the tubes, air from the circulating fan blows over the tubes moving the heat (there is the "exchanger" bit) through the ductwork to heat the space, the exhaust goes outside.

The black part at the bottom is the secondary heat exchanger, units with just tubes will be in the 78-82% efficiency range, adding the extra unit gets the efficiency up in the 90-95% range. As this process cools the exhaust it allows PVC pipe to be used.

    heat-exchanger-497x373.png

Older gas furnaces, called natural draft units, had burners that looked like an oven or BBQ burner, some are cast iron and others not much more than a pipe with holes in it.

    download.jpg

To bring us full circle, here is how a typical older style oil furnace is built.
The burner blows into the refractory lined heat exchanger, the refractory (a ceramic/fiberglass/asbestos/felt like material) is there to protect the steel heat exchanger from the direct flame. Old furnaces were lined with firebrick.
If the refractory breaks down the flame burns through the steel in short order.
