thats looking on the 'tired' line...... especially on the 1 side.

gaskets should be pretty cheap & then you'll know if its just wore out or not.

was gonna ask KOD if maybe it could be a valve not seating all the way.

I would hope he would check the valves when he gets the heads off.

Pour a little gas into the intake port, see if any leaks out around the intake valve.

    Lol.

My buds ask me what I do for 4 months in south Carolina?

I tell them I do internet consulting.

    ( I'm just not paid)

And I'm totally fine with that!

It doesn’t include truck or trailering rig costs but I guess vs a tractor doing the same thing it would be an almost wash.

yeah sure if you are in the right area you can make coin.

in my area? where theres a skid steer every couple farms over? nah you dont make much money & you have to hope you dont break something with every job.
that's why the mulcher is a way to make money in my area. not everybody has those.
but everybody who has one? breaks something on about every job. hitting rocks & so on.

you can make money, but the machine has to be busy all the time.
a machine that size? you gotta have a dedicated truck/trailer.. lot of investment.
would love to have it though! everybody needs more toys!

Is there Well Pump & Filter expert in this thread? Y'all may recall that we moved over the summer from a subdivision and about .4 acres to a much more rural area 10 miles away on 14 acres. We now have Propane, Septic Tank, and a Well. Also horses for neighbors on one side, and deer on the other side. We're loving it, and trying to learn about stuff as we go.
Now I wanna know more about my well Filter, while everything is fine, rather than waiting for a problem to occur. I learned from an online article about the function of the big blue tank. Look like that just does its thing until the bladder gives out, then you replace it. It's the tall black Filter that is a mystery.

    20230719_082256.jpg

When I search the model number (1054) I see pics and instructions like these below for changing the internal filter...
    Screenshot_20231128-192318_Drive.jpg

    Screenshot_20231128-191807_Drive.jpg

But my filter doesn't have that removable black plastic cap on top, instead it has timer dials like this...

    20231210_174603.jpg

Is there a filter in there? How is it serviced? Mine doesn't appear to have any way to get inside that black cylinder??

That looks like a water softener regen tank. If it is, it's obsolete and would use so much more salt over a modern unit that it's not worth spending a single dime on.

I don't see one in that set-up. I'm guessing the black tank is aeration. A big inline filter set up would look something like below. If the pics you are showing are not where the piping enters the house, check there for something like in this pic.

Related - I cannot recommend enough to pick up a reverse osmosis system for your drinking water. Every well I've been on improved when I installed one.

We had a 1947 John Deere B tri cycle front wheels on our farm. I remember having to start it by cranking over the flywheel on the side. That was after you opened the petcocks on both cylinders. We also a had a 1952 Ford. I loved using the John Deere to do the farm work.

This is just marketing BS, but it's what shows up when I search the model number on the cylinder. I don't have anything like in the pic that DetroitDarin posted. The house is only 9 years old, but maybe well equipment has a really short life before becoming obsolete?

I'm betting it's a fly by night water treatment system. These carpet baggers promise the world on improving the water quality, reel you in to a payment program, then the thing works like shit.

Threaten them with litigation and they cancel the contract and tell you to keep the equipment.

not an expert... just a guy on a farm with a well set up as a back up....

that doesnt look like a filter at all. looks like a softner .... pretty much outdated vs modern stuff.

now on your "blue" tank. thats also an old style so that your pump doesnt kick on every time you open a faucet or flush a toilet. YEP when it starts to leak or lose pressure on the bladder you throw it away.

a lot of the new well pump set ups dont use those anymore. you use a pressure demand pump that just kicks on direct with the preset pressure drop. they literally have that bladder inside of the pump now.

if its not broke? dont fix it..... but when that set up dies? you will want to modernize to a more efficient pump. this all depends on the type of well you have. a deep well shaft or a shallow well or cistern collection system.

my well has a pump down in the shaft & kicks on when i crack the spigot outside.
we had the same type of set up as you when the house was on the well water.

That would be your water softener. Pretty sure it should have a brine tank, but maybe it's a saltless design? This is my setup

    Has the same timer

They're pretty antiquated now and use 60 gallons of water to do a complete regen cycle. The new ones that look almost the same have a digital timer that you can set gallons of water used before a regen. Somehow mine still works despite having no pre-filter for the past 22 years. Thought I lost it a month ago when it sucked up a slump of dirt from either the well or that couple bags of salt I bought that looked dirty.

After replacing the drain line back to main drain to the septic and completely cleaning out the brine tank and float it lives to die another day. Will replace it this Spring hopefully with an updated unit.

Thanks to all who responded :)
I was hoping to find someone that has the same black cylinder, so I could learn how to service it. Maybe I have the only one ever sold, or the only one still in existence  EDIT: as I'm typing this I see that Delta09 has a similar setup... I'm not an orphan after all!
I have nowhere to add any softener salt. I do recall seeing in some paperwork that I have a shallow well. Supposed to be on the same aquifer as Abita Springs water.... considered healthy by the Choctaw Indians going way back. The water is still bottled today.
I hesitate to change anything in the setup, even if something was to break. This because it works so well, with water pressure at faucets throughout the house and property that are almost equal to being on a municipal water system. I've been in others houses that I could never "live" in, because you turn on a faucet and just get a trickle or water. :annoyed:

It's the most common water softener setup here in my part of Yankee country. You might not even need one being that far South. You can get a water sample before the softener to determine how hard your water is to see if you even need it.

I have pretty decent water pressure, but I do have a large bladder tank with a 40/60 switch. It's on par with municipal systems. My water pressure issues seem to come from the new faucets I installed and their low-flow design. It is what it is, but also less water going into the old septic.

Yes! Yours looks very similar to mine, except I don't have that tank that shows in the foreground. The water in the house seems very good, very minimal mineral buildup but not so soft as to where you can't rinse the shampoo of of your few remaining hairs when in the shower.
I'm told that this dial timer device does some kind on purge each night, but I haven't been awake to see that yet. In our case the well house is probably 200 ft from the main house.

That thing should not be doing a regen every night/morning. Depending on the setup it could be every 5-7 days. It uses about 50-80 gallons each time to do the cycle. If it cycles every night it needs to be setup different or replaced. Mine regens every 6 days. Probably a little bit too much, but the adjuster knob broke off years ago. I have the replacement part, but don't want to tear everything apart just to replace the unit soon.

My main well is an in ground pump, but I also have a large cistern that is the back porch. It's at least 1,000 gallons. Has the same pump/tank setup you have.

It's great water for washing vehicles and watering plants. It's all I use it for. It used to be tied into the house for the hot water, but that is no longer up to health code so I cut out all that plumbing.
