iirc the 390 in my old ‘76 F250 made 376 at 2600 rpm, and got 8-10 mpg.

Amazing how far we have come. I-Force Max 465 ft/lbs while most likely fetching 24 mpgs hwy.

 

And yet we have people on here bitching that a brick shaped truck with that kind of power doesn’t get 30mpg. Likely the same people that were begging for that very power increase from the 3rd gen.

 

It’s a funny thing. We complain about the shortcomings of things we have, but then tear down things we don’t have because we need to justify our sense of superiority.


I’m fucking over the moon that I can get 23mpg highway in a 4500lb truck with 300lb-ft of torque and factory 33s. Sign me the f up

 

I am one of those people. Lol! Diesel we could have both power and mpg, but oh well. And honestly I live in the land of diesel trucks (Idaho) gotta say this time of year with the cold, the diesel fumes like to settle and it is absolutely awful sucking those in.

But yeah it is amazing how far we have come with the gassers. And since the Tacoma is about the size of the 70s-80s fullsizes, arguably the perfect size, what a time to be alive, right!?

 

diesel is the answer but the US govt hates its citizens and would rather offset and redistribute the money to their friends and stockholders more than fixing the real issue.

 

I just checked gas and diesel prices for my zip code using GasBuddy. Regular 87 gas is around $2.60 per gallon. Diesel is around $4.00 per gallon. So, for my AO at least, any added fuel economy is more that wiped out by the fuel price alone. That's not even factoring the added upfront cost of the diesel engine and additional maintenance costs.

There is a reason Chevy discontinued the 3.0 diesel in their mid-sized trucks. They don't make sense economically in the US. And their sales must have shown that, or they would still be selling them. It's a different political and fuel supply landscape in other areas of the world where light duty diesel engine use is more practical and prolific.

IMO diesel still shines in a heavy-duty truck application where heavy and longer distance towing is the primary usage.

 

Wait, what? When did GM announce that? I thought they are keeping it due to it's success and having the market cornered with Stellantis and Ford dropping out of the 1/2 ton diesel game.

 

Still available in the half-ton I believe. Discontinued in the mid-size Colorado in '22.

 

Yep. With EPA estimates, the diesel is costlier per mile than the 2.7t, and that’s without purchase price or maintenance costs.

Yeah it never works out money-wise. Years ago there was an article in one of the travel trailer magazines I used to get. The never ending gas vs diesel debate. It is usually a wash in the end.

This new hybrid isn’t going to be cheap, nor will get better mpgs we are told, tow ratings go down 500 lbs, so don’t see the added benefit other than to show boat.

Think the SR5 trim with the middle of the road engine is going to be the most value. Won’t be a “bargain” though.

 

If it “never works out money-wise,” and the power and torque gap is as small as it is now, why are you constantly posting that diesel is the answer?
