So I purchased a new rear bumper (A Expedition One Dual Swing), and when I put it on there were no spots to add the rear blind spot radar sensors (one left and one right).

It's very thick metal and even if the sensors could be mounted on the inside of corners, I doubt the sensors would work through it.

I'm wondering if anyone has come across this issue and had an answer to somehow add the sensors back? I am thinking of trying to make some enclosure and mounting externally on the bumper in a somewhat similar position.

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

You have to find a bumper that is compatible with the BSM. Because 99% are not.

    More like 99.99%.

I think Apogee Offroad was working on one, but I think they're the only ones.

There was also a bloke on here, trying to integrate them into his taillights (like Ford), but that was all custom work.

The rest of us just ditch the BSM sensors and turn our heads to check for traffic.

I don't mind turning my head, but I loved having the indicators light up on the mirrors when someone is next to me on the highway. That's really the reason I want them working.

BSM is super useful though ESPECIALLY when backing out of parking spots with RCTA alerts and its one of the reasons i havent gone to a steel bumper myself. would have been easier to switch if i never got the tech package

^And the sensors aren't that reliable I hear, failing after 5 years or so from water and road salt.

    parking sensors AFAIK are ultrasonic
    Mounted in holes

that being said I’m not sure how much leeway there is in the system
    Or how fabricators integrate it

as stock systems generally mean calibrated within parameters
    ie sensor in certain position

who knows maybe it can still work in a important location to show how close an object is

generally such systems mfg always warns is not the final thing to be relied upon, rather the driver and is just a supplement.

fronts at least wear faster on cars that have it from impacts with small chips

every car is different. Some are very specific in tolerances and adjustment

Toyota you’d hope is different from that

    which may be…
Could be wrong but that bumper looks like any other steel rear but with holes simply drilled to put sensors.
Only one way to find out. Not much to lose by drilling holes.

Apogee, buckstop and 4wp are the only 3 I’ve come across and I’ve been paying close attention
The sensors in question are blind spot monitor radar sensors that don’t function through metal and have to be mounted at a specific angle below the taillights (or behind the rear wheels at least) then calibrated

    Some stuff
Haha, nope. I started having issues with mine in the first year or2(don't remember exactly when). Dirt and shit .....
They said not under warranty, offroad use is excluded etc(TRD OR)
Showed some pics off my dirt driveway and dirt road... at the time, I still had my jeep, so WASNT wheeling the Tacoma...

Anyway, no bumper I know of is compatible w/ BSM IF you have swingouts(unless apogee finally finished).
And, the 4wp isn't. The swingouts mount where the BSM sensors go( I have one)

^Thankfully used replaced sensors are "cheap" on eBay, only $100 per side.

Apogee's bumper has both swingout and BSM sensor mounts. It's finished and selling for $4000.

Good info in this thread. Apparently our 3rd Gens are equipped with a Continental SRR2-A 24 GHz Blind-Spot radar sensor (fccid.io link to manual + attached) that emits radiation in the 24.05 to 24.25 GHz range and emits 0.0027 milliwatts per centimeter squared (not very much which is why the only bumpers it works with have plastic or composite covers that the signal can penetrate).
