Any way to check if a used M/T has been over revved?

I think I am holding out for a 4th gen, but in the event I determine they are too expensive for what I want I would possibly consider a 3rd gen.

Is there any way to check the computer for any over-revs in a manual 2020 Tacoma?

I can’t answer that, but in stock form the computer has a rev limiter to save people from themselves….I don’t think you need to worry about it. There are also aftermarket tunes that let people rev the motors up to 7250 and I haven’t heard of any issues doing that either. There are also factory 6800 rpm redline tunes on other vehicles with the 3.5L and they contain all the same moving parts.

In short, I don’t think this is an aspect of a used Tacoma to worry about.

Maybe the info is available in Techstream or something but I really don’t know.

I'm not worried about someone smacking the limiter as much as the possibility someone missed a shift and ditched the truck before it grenades.

That’s fair. If there’s a way to see the max rpm history of the motor, I would think it would be in Techstream. I didn’t see it there when I used TS but maybe @Bishop84 who is a technician would know.

I haven’t seen it in ages, the fr-s used to trigger it and grenade.

typically a random code triggers and the event is stored, sometimes in the abs and you can not clear it.

If it helps, I think it would be really difficult to money-shift a Tacoma and hurt something. The reason I say that is because of the gearing. We already know that up to 7250 rpm isn’t going to hurt it - since some aftermarket tunes support that high (may not be smart or ideal, but it doesn’t grenade there).

With stock tires and gearing, redline of 7250 would be at the following speeds:

    1 - 37
    2 - 74
    3 - 113
    4 - 149
    5 - 176
    6 - 209

1st and 2nd are not exactly easy to money shift into. I doubt anybody was going over 113 and dropped it into 3rd. 4th 5th and 6th aren’t exactly feasible speeds.

They’d have to really screw up to money-shift 1st because it needs to be done just right and its position isn’t really easy to accidentally slip into, in my experience at least. 2nd they’d need to be going over at least 74 mph, and accidentally landing in 2nd gear when trying to grab 4th just doesn’t really happen either in my experience.

They just skid the rear tires and you head butt the steering wheel.

    https://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/...ter-and-rocker-retainer-kit-lotus-toyota-2gr/

"Above 7300rpm the lash adjusters fail to maintain adequate control of the rockers, and the rockers sometimes escape their proper position and fling loose. This causes a valve to no longer open, and can even cause severe damage to the cylinder head, valve cover and camshaft."

Basically if the engine has been overrev'd to the point of engine damage, it will be quite obvious and not running right.

Once upgraded the 2GR can rev higher than Hondas:

Yep…if it was hurt enough to matter and not fixed, I would think the test drive wouldn’t go very well.

Sweet thanks for the breakdown of the ratios, I guess that really isn't bad at all even if they slipped into 2nd going down the highway.

RA60F stock shifter is wide long throws and hard to mis shift. High pedal bite. Slow moving flywheel.

slow low-rev RWD truck that doesn’t get raced.

    RC62F probably the same.

The big bastard is the burn out causing catapstrophic diff failure.

Because open diffs spin one tire, it causes the pinion to let loose and usually the diff housing cracks.

The ABS will trigger constant event recordings of one tire spinning 60mph and the rest stationary.

    Declined warranty claim all day.

Happens in the snow too when people get stuck and frustrated. Rare but the ABS stores the damning info.

^You'd have to consciously disable Trac/Auto-LSD to do one-wheel peel, no?

Yup, and the system gets cranky when there's massive speed differentials. It records more than people realize. Just like the SRS computer. Loads and loads of data.

Any manual trans vehicle can be over-revved if you grab the wrong gear on a downshift....no rev limiter will save you from that.

To the OP...if it runs and sounds normal, it wasn't over-revved at all or enough to matter. If it was over-revved to the point where did matter, it would have come apart when that happened.

I didn’t at first gather that money shifting is what he was concerned about. Once he clarified that, I provided more detail that demonstrates I know what can happen….except it would be really difficult to do on a 3rd gen with the way they’re geared.
