Sup fellas. New here. So my moms co-worker just gave me a mint condition 5vzfe Tacoma 4wd with 225k miles. He had a lot of maintenance done on it before handing it over. Timing belt, new pullies, new water pump, transmission flush, coolant flush (green as recommended by the manual) etc. However he said that he has never been able to figure out a misfire. It’s always a p0303 misfire on number 3. I erase it and it comes back after 20+ miles or so. I changed out the coils to Denso since he installed after market, changed out the spark plugs since they weren’t duel electrode, I changed out all the wires to Denso. Pcv valve…Still misfiring. Took it to a trusted mechanic and he hooked up his expensive scan tool. Kept it for a day to try to figure out what’s wrong. He checked compression and that ended up being okay. Checked the fuel injectors and those were fine. Block test…no head gasket issues. The only thing the truck needs a is a valve cover gasket which I just ordered. A little of oil leak on the passengers side of the valve cover. Which is where the misfire is coming from…a long shot, but could a valve cover gasket cause a misfire on these 1st gen tacomas? The truck runs fine/decent. Could it be a ECU?

I can’t help you but I’m sure you’ll have some good advice by days end. A leaking valve can cause a misfire code.

sweet deal. Tell your mom to keep it up. He wants to impress her, and it’s working out great for you.

Wow, that is a really nice truck. I have a spare computer for one of those, but it also could be the igniter module going out.

Long shot but.................. I had a misfire that I could not cure. It only misfired after warming up. Drove me crazy. I swapped out "All" the injectors and it was fixed. Sound familiar?

Very. The truck don’t shake or rattle and has no problem at highway speeds. Just a small jiggle at idle….then code pops up. P0303 :frusty: So possibly needs new fuel injectors? :fingerscrossed:

You can send your existing injectors to Motor West in California and they'll rebuild them for $25 a piece. A lot cheaper than buying all new ones

I have a full set of good ones I removed from my truck when I installed the turbocharger and larger injectors that I'd be willing to sell.

They say when you buy a new used truck.....you really should preform a compression test way before you start throwing money at it...

I would do a leakdown test....that would test both the valves and the integrity of the head...

if that injector has a seal problem like its bottom o-ring that would get tested too...

Watch the coolant level .....if that starts going down, assuming the radiator cap is still good....
    ....would be sign of concern....

If you have a crack in the head....or gasket leak this might be helpful.....

His leak test was spot on....with my 3rz when it came into my possession...
    bubbled like old faithful...

but yeah ....he contradicts himself a lot....
...no arguing there.....with him crossing the billion view mark.....its bound to happen..

are we about to destroy another thread.....boy we're a rowdy bunch today...aint we...

He nailed it on the compression test check too......never pour a bunch of $ into these until you got those numbers....

And that truck is gorgeous,,,,,those are the best looking grill/head lite years...

definitely interested! Can’t hurt changing out the ECU. How much are you willing to sell it for?
