“Ham frequencies” covers a range of frequency bands that include HF, VHF, UHF. You need a license to legally operate on them but if the shit hits the fan and you need to communicate then a license is probably the least of your worries. VHF/UHF radios allow you to dial in whatever frequency the radio is capable of (meaning the frequency range it can tune, I.e. 140-170 or 430-450). Handhelds are typically about 5 watts, mobile set ups run on 12V are typically 50W of output. Higher the output, further the range you can broadcast over. A good antenna is needed as well.

No, it has to be a VHF/UHF dual band 1/4 wave or 1/2 wave antenna (assuming your looking at a dual band radio = VHF/UHF).

ohhh ok awesome. Thanks for telling me that.

I think this one would work.
QYT KT-980PLUS 50 Watt Dual Band Four Display Car Mobile Radio VHF/UHF 144-148/420-450MHz Quad-Standby Mobile Radio Amateur (Ham) Two Way Radio with Free Programming Cable Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09G966HFN

    It says
Output power 50W Max ( VHF / UHF

but the guy said UHF should be 40W max.

would that be an issue ?

That’ll work just fine. There’s also some antennas on the page.

I want to find the bolt size I need how do I do that?
Situation I have a 22 Tacoma access cab with the utility delete. I want to mount ham radios behind the black Plaistc cover in the access cab where the seats would mount if they were there.
is there a resources to find the thread size or a way to determine tone bolt size needed with out messing up the treads

Which mounts are you trying to utilize? The weld nuts on the back wall or the larger bolt holes in the floor for the actual seats/seat belts?

The wall bolt holes are normally like M6. The floor bolts are usually m10 or m12.

Hey folks, need some input. I have my Yaesu mounted well; base under the passenger seat and head on the dash. Pulled my rj12 wire for remote mic, but can’t seem to get the mic to work on an rj45 keystone. I thought rj45 was backwards compatible to rj12? Ponied up for the Yaesu extension just to make sure. That works, but I think it’s just an overpriced rj12 and 2:1 plug (which doesn’t work for mounting).

Any thoughts on why my rj12 extension with an rj45 through connector isn’t working?

Has anyone roof mounted an antenna in their 1995-1997 without pulling the rear window out? I'm trying to figure out how much I can drop the headliner to clear my drill bit and if the rear window comes out.

I'd like to mount a Comet SBB-1NMO to use with my AT-779UV that I've installed in the ash tray location.

Yep, it’s a 6 wire, it’s just the 8 wire keystone pass through that doesn’t seem to work. That’s what I thought was backwards compatible. But I’ll check the wire again for redundancy. I haven’t run the Yaesu wire to the keystone yet…. Have to take the dash apart a little. What’s your keystone? Is it an 8 or 6 wire?

    Thanks,
FYI, Today I found out how to display the BATT volts on the FTM-500 but it has to be initiated each time you power on the radio. Push and hold, GM (button), Function (knob) then power on and hold till radio powers up. In the right hand corner upper grey notification bar BATT volts will be displayed.

I don't believe it is, I made several comments on the YT, and finally today I got a reply. On my old FT8500 I could always display it and that radio was just analog. The FTM500 was purchased to replace that radio,I really missed that simple piece of data. I knew it had to be their and someone knew it.
