Wait i have another pot-stirrer for the Toyota fanboys,

Why does the 5.0 V8 in the F150 get the same MPG as this 2.4 turbo 4 banger that needs to be idled after every highway trip while the 5.0 is also producing much more power and towing capacity? How can anyone reasonably defend this piece of shit 2.4?

So again, what do you do between highway driving and stopping the engine? Where would you be on the chart…before stopping the engine?

The 5.0 gets worse mileage than this 2.4.

why are you so mad about this new engine? Just don’t buy one.

This seems like something Toyota could use technology to make much simpler for end users. Can’t they monitor those parameters via the engine control computer and then display a message on the driver information center when you need to idle before shutting down? When you’re back outside the bounds of the parameters the message goes away. No questions, no gray zone.

To be fair, we don't know that this feature doesn't exist in the 4th gen yet. And I agree, it seems like a simple answer to the question.

Just to spell it out one more time, the chart regarding idling time is specifically about how much idling time to allow if you are about to turn the engine off immediately after certain activities.

If you aren’t turning the engine off immediately after performing the activity requiring idling time, idling time is not required.

The number of times you fall under the required to idle criteria will be very small. I agree it’s annoying to have to consider compared to a naturally aspirated vehicle or one with an electric cooling system though.

Thanks, but no need to spell it out. Almost all can read and comprehend minus one.

Chevy uses an electric water pump. It runs as long as it needs to after shutting down.

Practically speaking the cool down is thing is probably not a big deal, but Toyota's design choice here disappoints me. And I confess to being a bit of a Toyota fanboy.

Long gone, but wish I did. No carpet, roll up windows, standard cab and full gauges with manual and 135 horses! I ran it hard (19 yrs old) but was anal about the idle time...trouble free for about 90 k and then traded it in on an 89 xtra cab.

Toyota should program an automatic "dieseling" mode. That way when you hit the off button, the engine still burps and burbles before shutting down completely!

This thread is highly entertaining.

The only time I can think where you'd hit those parameters (driving 60+ mph for an extended period, then immediately stopping and turning the engine off) is when you are driving on the freeway for a while and pull off to a rest area. Any other time you'd probably have more than a minute of taking the off ramp and driving slower after getting off the freeway, like driving over to stop somewhere for gas, food, shopping, etc.

Seems like an odd thing, is there any other turbos where they say you need to do that? I wonder if it is more just a CYA/legal thing rather than something you'd actually have to be concerned about in the real world.
