So i recently changed my power steer pump with a 4 runners powersteer pump both looked the same it was used tho.it worked after i bled the system the correct way it was softer, for a little while (2 weeks) then it gave out. Its so loud my steering feels horrible. I didnt want to have to buy a new pump. Anyways what can be making my pump wear out so fast? I am on 33s. Also anyone know a upgraded steering pump for 1st gen im a 2004 3.4 4x btw

Take the pump off and drain the reservoir… there is a filter screen in the bottom inside of the reservoir that gets plugged. Different people have different ways of cleaning it.

I wonder if you have debris in the system ruining the pump. Did your last pump blow up?

Out of chance did you ever replace the power steering hoses...

There's no mention of them in the service manuals....

but in the construction industry, hydraulic hoses, especially those under high heat and pressure....

are supposed to be replaced on a 5 or 6 yr interval, to avoid catastrophic failure and loss of life..

There's no exterior signs most of time, of what its like on the inside.......just little rubber bits delaminating.....

So are we talking about 20yr old original hoses....

It was a big bullet to bite for me....like $300 for the gates direct replacements on those 2 hoses.....

and the Valvoline Maxlife ATF I swopped in, should give em max life...

now after that, I swop out what's in the reservoir once a year...

old dirty hydraulic fluid......makes great cutting fluid at high pressures...

    just my 2cents.....

Loud as in shrieking or groaning? Shrieking is possibly the belt not tight enough, groaning is **usually** air in the lines. I know I'm overstating the obvious but since it's not mentioned, are you keeping it topped off to the right level at hot/cold? Using ATF, not power steering fluid? (PS fluid will work in a pinch, just getting all the duckies in line.) Leaks anywhere?

PS pumps generally don't go out so often, even cheaper aftermarket ones. It's possible you got a bum, but would guess that last. The pump itself may be fine, as mentioned above clean the reservoir screen, flush it again and use the correct ATF, otherwise bite the bullet and get a new one, even an aftermarket with a warranty is better than risking damaging the steering rack.

I ordered a new one from Parts Geek for my 2001. It had to be Sept 2001 or later model. Works like a charm on larger than stock tires. I also have a new rack and pinion since the original had a leak.

thankyou very helpful you helped me connect pieces together, like you say ps pumps dont ho out so fast normally and now that i remember the guy swore it was fine when he took it off his truck, and i remember that after i bled the ps by turning my key to on and then turning my wheels left to right and then driving it, it worked fine for a few days then it started making loud groaning sounds. And now its hard to steer the thing. I might just give it one last shot and clean the resivore and attemp to bleed the air out. Who knows the thing might work i just didnt know how to bleed the system of any air.

Pump res screen was my very first project
Upon initial inspection, fluid was black like oil. Vids show flash light method to see just how gross/clogged screen is.
3 cans brake cleaner later and fluid flush
    Good to go

Guessing the groaning coming from lack of fluid flow bc of clogged screen
    GL
    Keep everyone posted

Yeah on any groaning, I would always check for low fluid, and that screen is a close second..
    happens all the time here.

I just figure if you got a replacement one.....surely you checked that.

Yeah I took mine off to clean that screen....and somehow I didnt get that oring back in right.

Drove it to work, without testing around the block couple times.

    Boy was that a mistake.

By the time I got to work, it was a moaning and a groaning.
    definitely a learning experience...

just because its not leaking at rest....doesnt mean its not leaking....
