For the OP: ECGS has the Detroit True Trac for the 8” axle in the SR. (V6 auto) This is a Torsen-style limited-slip diff, not a traditional ‘locker’.

Yes: almost seems like it's already working on the problem before you even select it manually and push the button to get: "Full-boat Auto-LSD on steroids" mode. :D

You are right. There is nothing wrong with the system. It does a fantastic job of redistributing power to wheels with traction. And since you have experienced a true limited slip diff you understand the difference. I am used to Fox body Mustang limited slip diffs. The surge from the back trying to get the car moving in icy situations. The Tacoma with it's traction control aids does a fantastic job of limiting wheel spin. I even have found it will let you control a slide when playing around without interfering too much. Technology has come a long way!

If you can get the whole off-road axle for a decently cheap price, I would definitely go for it. Saves all the work/money that is buying & installing an aftermarket locking carrier. Plus you get some bigger & stronger parts out of it, except for wheel bearings unfortunately.

The trick to ALSD is to not overpower the system. Feather the throttle until the system starts to control. If you don’t believe, on a rainy day, try ALSD WOT from a stop:anonymous:

Did you completely turn off TC? Do you have mud tires?

Locker is definitely not a magic solution for mud.

Go with the Harrop E Locker, you won’t be disappointed.

If you had ALSD on in 2WD mode prior to switching to the 4WD system, when you switched to 4WD that automatically disabled TRAC(?stoner can’t remember the actual system(s) disabled), and you were on 2 wheels only with no traction control.

Traction control will help you in mud, sand, and loose uphill terrain. Make sure your ALSD button is not engaged when switching to 4HI.

Hope I got that right fer ya! If not, play play play and get to know your 3rd Gen TRAC.

I looked into the TrueTrac, it is not available for the 3rd Gen Tacoma in either differential as per the Eaton Application pdf.

Only thier E-Locker is available for the 8.0" or the 8.9" on the third gens.

Interesting. I thought the 3rd gen 8.0 axle was the same as the open diff 2nd gen six lug axle. Some erroneously refer to it as an 8.4, but it is an 8.0 as well.

I thought so too... but I don’t know enough about the 2 gen to say...

Regardless Eaton does not show a Truetrac available for the 8.0" diff.

There is a TrueTrac for the 8.0” 3rd gen axle. You can order the diff set up that way from ECGS.

The 2nd gen non lock (called 8.4 by many as you said) is not the same or similar to 3rd gen 8.0. The one they call 8.4 has a brace that connects the carrier bearing caps for rigidity and the ring gear has 12 bolts and uses shims for carrier bearings. The 3rd gen 8.0 should have 10 bolts from what I remember and it uses threaded carrier bearing adjusters, not shims.

I believe the 3rd gen 8.0 is a continuation of the Toyota V6 axle (TV6).

I really don’t know my history other than that but I believe the 2nd gen locker axle is similar to the TV6.

There are truetracs available for the “8.4”, 3rd gen 8.0, and 2nd gen 8.0 locker. I believe they are all different part numbers.

Wow, more corner cutting and Toyota resting on its reputation and market success…How disappointing that they stuck a weaker axle than the “8.4” under a heavier & newer truck

Eh, for most uses I think it's fine. They gave all the Off-Road and Pro trims and all manual transmissions the larger 8.75 diff. The 8.0" is weaker but it still does the job. The worst part about it is the threaded carrier bearing adjusters are not known to be the best. There are a lot of Tacomas out there with that diff and not very many are having problems though. With many of them being on significantly larger tires no less.

I'm going to do a write-up once I'm done but I'm actually working on putting the 2nd gen "8.4" under my truck since it has decent strength and has the option for a TrueTrac and 5.29s. Will be selling the 8.75 with locker once it's done and proven to be running good. I considered finding myself a 3rd gen 8.0 but the "8.4" has better reliability and bolts in just the same so I would rather have it for sure.

Circling back to update on my findings: the actual Auto LSD lamp on my 2014 immediately extitigushes upon selecting
4H on my truck. I'm assuming the same with the 3rd gen truck in the video although I dont think they showed the cluster before their final test demo.
