I bought a used 2021 Tacoma 4X4 Sport with the 3.5 motor with 18k miles on it several months ago. On several occasions lately after backing up and then shifting to drive and trying to accelerate there has been no response, NOTHING. Then after what seems an eternity (probably just a split second) the truck accelerates. Very upsetting and the stealership claims they cannot get the same response, so they do not know what to do to fix it. I am afraid this will happen again while trying to merge into traffic.any thoughts or suggestions.

If it only happens when shifting from reverse to drive, then the odds of it being an issue in motion are slim.

Is it possible its not fully in gear for a moment and the selector falls the last bit into place after a moment?

Are you rapidly shifting, or shifting out of D before the truck has come to a complete stop after reversing? I've seen people try to slam from one to the other too quickly and it causes problems.

Have you tried being a little slower/more deliberate with the gear changes?

I may have shifted from reverse to drive without stopping fully but I am 81 years old so I do not do anything rapidly anymore.

I believe, but don't necessarily take my word as gospel, that if you shift before fully stopped it will cause this delay you are experiencing. It's a safety/self-preservation method to prevent damage to the transmission.

Unplug the cable to the gas peddle maybe some dirt got in the connector and causing intermittent issues .

Just sounds like a transmission thing. Does it do it from a normal stop without having just shifted into drive?

I doubt your vintage brain to muscle input is that accurate to notice such an event. I call user error.

Tacoma is snail literally, it takes time to accelerate. It is V6 , but crippled, weakened, watered down V6 because of stupid emission laws that for some reason rich people flying jets don't have to follow but we do.

Also, you are not in 4x4 while driving right? Stupid question but might as well ask.

Programming, not issue. Its doing what it's set to do. That's why the dealer cant replicate the issue.

I can't confirm this, but I have heard that Toyota did put a small delay in the R to D switch over to help extend the life of some drive line components.

My 2nd gen would engage instantly and sometimes felt rough when it did it.

On a similar note, I've had issues accelerating from a forward stop (intersection). When I step on the loud peddle, nothing happens for a couple seconds. Almost got clipped a couple times because of this.
