The only problem here is that the quill is installed with liquid gasket. So, R&R may not be fun.

After swapping two TOBs this year, I can say that there didn't seem to be any wear, just a frustration. The job is pretty easy other than dealing with the dumb harness bracket locations. I believe Toyota could have packaged it just as easily for the assembly line as for maintenance work. Either shift the brackets to the side a bit, or just give us a single disconnect on the bell housing. Oh well.

…..anyway, 2016 154k stock clutch stock trans, no issues. Highly recommend 2 wheel lo mod if you do any trailer maneuvering to save on the clutch a bit.

This is the equivalent of when someone asks positive and negative experiences of a specific vehicle and they get don't buy it because "it's a (insert make / model here)". Great, you've identified the vehicle, back it up. But this is the modern world, I suppose.

My point was we've had 8 years of the RC62F, and very little issues of note, with ample opportunity for any underlying gremlins inherent to the design to rear their heads. To come in here like @TacoTuesday1 did and claim that these transmissions are horribly designed and ticking time bombs by providing vague pictures with no analysis and claiming that Toyota are idiots for not changing this "wrong" design doesn't jive with all of the other evidence that they've been very reliable transmissions. I thought the tongue-in-cheek nature of my post was pretty clear, if not, go back and read for context.

I am not sure I’ve seen something that really sums up the Tacoma experience as succinctly as this.

“Nothing wrong with it at all, can’t go wrong, works great..just need to modify it so it’s usable.”

My close friend owns a Japanese auto repair business.
I fix his computers... he fixes our Toyotas.

    I'm friendly with his techs.
They tell me this transmission is now a single casting with the bell housing.
Toyota clutches grenade when they fail, and destroy the bell housing.
This means a new casting and transmission rebuild.

This tells me a preemptive clutch replacement is a good idea.

Sounds like your friend hasn't worked on one since 2015. 2016+ bellhousings are removable and the quill is replaceable. That was a problem on the 2005-2015 6 speed, which had an aluminum quill (which wore out) that was built into the bellhousing which is built into the transmission case.

And, I would not say that I’ve ever heard of the clutches grenading and taking everything out.

I've literally never heard of this.

I have to trust what the techs tell me.
I was a dealership mechanic for Toyota in the early 70s.. a very long time ago, so I have no hands-on with this transmission.

I see the line, but I see no big through bolts as can been seen at the rear end of the transmission casting.

Risk or not, I wanted the 6 sp manual, but these are Unobtanium at the end of the 2023 model year.
I should have ordered in mid-June, but that is water under the bridge now.

    My friend owns the shop.
    His techs do the work.

I figure since they are Toyota certified, and work professionally on Toyotas, they might know something beyond hearsay.
I don't have a dog in this event, as I couldn't get the manual for my new truck.

Then again in my business (computers) I never cease to be amazed at how many "professionals" can't find their own butts even with an instruction manual and flashlight.

Well, many would say if it was a real Toyota 4x4 like what they sell in other countries for rugged use, or models made in the past said to be better

it would have a manual Tcase shifter, that basically gives you the option of using 2LO or easily adding it. Instead of 4X electrical knob with expensive actuator that eventually fails, and gets water in it.

it would be useful In many scenarios. Like backing up a trailer without frying the clutch and binding the steering on asphalt, etc

I thought they continued with the non replaceable sleeve but it appears I may be wrong
Like I said, I hope I am wrong about that.

I’m confused. You say your buddy owns a shop that works on Japanese and call them techs.
Like a current certified Toyota tech? Sounds like no.

also, certified can mean certified to put the car in Drive.

if he owns a shop, they are not working on new vehicles under factory warranty. That have low miles not in need of trans removal. Not to mention the rarity of manual configuration.

and that’s fine. He’s making more money for himself and doesn’t have to deal with warranty time theft. but also means he’s probably never worked on a newer trans.

the above pics and diagrams show the bell housing held on with bolts.
never seen a stock normally driven clutch blow up.
Dual mass flywheels do because they’re multi piece.
Saw a new car left in gear pulled by a tow truck when it requires flatbed. That took out the clutch. But it didn’t fly through the trans.

Metal flying from a flywheel is probably more damaging than a clutch. In the case of a dual mass. I assume Toyotas still using cheaper single mass.

If clutches were blowing up and shattering the bellhousing, there would be a recall.

100,500kms + and the transmission and clutch have been no problem for me. I did get the 2lo mod to help in reverse on hills or when towing.

Edit: Grammer mistake... very gooder at english

The transmission does have a stupid tall reverse. 2lo is a great mod to help with that, except I decided to remove and sell my 2lo when I spent 25x as much instead on a regear. And here pretty soon I’ll spend another 25x as much on an RC60F transmission….guy math :D

Technically I could still employ 2lo with these changes and have an absolutely absurdly low reverse ratio, but there really is no reason when the gearing is 1.5x lower than stock lol.

No doubt not high miles or age of truck. Just thought I'd chime in on what I've experience since really there aren't that many manuals out there.
