I think that's the thing.. the Engineers, who the Project managers and everyone else who came through the shop said are fresh graduates who are designing things how they want... Not how they need. And since it's such a large global company.. it just happens. The internal radius was just for clearance.. it didn't need to be .060".. the .125 rads were fine enough.

    Lol youngsters...
Back in '89 when I graduated and was a fresh engineer, when I did something like that, the machine shop foreman just publically castrated me until I got better.

 I'm really starting to believe there should be a requirement to take manufacturing/machining courses, even just the basics, as a prerequisite for an engineering degree. Granted, these are all prototypes, but damn.. the money savings in time alone going to that larger .125" Rad will be huge when ramped up to production. Not to mention the savings in less tooling required and ultimately less lines of code.. all these things I think would be very beneficial to them to know and understand. But what do I know.. I'm just making the stuff that goes to space or gets blown up.. lol

When I went to become an engineer, we had several semester long labs. One was CNC machining and lathes. We began the semester doing manual work. By end of semester we wrote code to do the same thing automated.
I don't think they do that anymore.
I also have a bit of an advantage... I was a bodyman and welder before I went to college at age 22.;)

I'm a firm believer that the engineer should have to disassemble and reassemble their creation. Being able to work on things and replace components simply is important

I know at the University of Maine the mechanical engineering students do have some sort of machining requirement. The put a nice big machine shop right in the front of the new $80 million building just put up. Really big windows in there to see the tons of milling equipment.

I actually was at the University of Maine several years ago. I did a white paper on hydraulic systems design and went to several universities to present that paper. Lol back when I was younger and more relevant...

It all depends just what your dealing with . I agree in theory but many times products are designed to be built on assembly lines being the second part of the design the first being it does the job it was made for.

I loved the welding engineers that worked 10 years in the field then the company paid for the schooling.

Compared to the ones that had one semester hands on of all the processes.

Lol! Nice. Sub'd for sure. Thanks. Also, off topic, I really appreciate and support your link to Suicide Prevention.. I lost my Dad to suicide 10 years ago this past Halloween.. so it's a big issue to me and for me. Awareness and not letting it be taboo is the best thing for it imo.. I know it's helped me. So

Welp, that was fun. We all Got almost everybody back going again, from a peak of 97,000 out down to 66 in 7 days. Was a shit show at times, but the contract crew we had was awesome. Glad I get to be home for Christmas! IMG_6183.jpg had to wait a couple days before a crew could get to this one.

I spent the afternoon servicing the Subaru.

It should come as no surprise that Mrs Green is several years removed from being a teenager -- you would never suspect it looking at the inside of her car however... :annoyed: :frusty:
