Hello! I bought my 08 DCSB 6 Speed a little while back, and the previous owner had installed a transfer tank in the bed, which I have since taken the liberty of repolishing, and redoing all of the fuel lines.
I have had a great experience with it so far, and have essentially doubled my fuel range which is a big bonus for me. My last fill up, I got 430 miles between stops, however I am not sure that this is the furthest I could go, as I did not want to push too far. The transfer tank is a 17 gallon unit plumbed into the filler neck, and I made the mistake of only putting 16 gallons in when I filled for this range. I am averaging 14mpg, and I only let the truck tank get a little bit below a quarter tank on this fillup. It has been a sweet mod so far, and it gets some funny looks at the gas station. That being said, I live in a very steep mountain area, and have 33's on the truck currently so i'm really not surprised, or disappointed by that fuel mileage. Nor do I particularly care.
Whether its safe or road legal..... definitely not road legal. No rollover valve, and no stickers on it, a few other things its missing. I do feel like it is safe however. Truck doesn't throw any codes for gas cap, and it is a fully enclosed system. Two lines, one feed, and one I think the previous owner used as basically a breather (to the filler neck of course). It worked for him for many years, so I kept it simple. I've basically been thinking of it the same as a fuel cell.
Anyway, thought some guys on here would find some interest. I did lose a little bed space already having a DCSB, but it isn't as noticable as I expected. It is mainly a camping rig, and I don't haul much in the bed other than camping gear.
Some things that I would like to add to improve the setup though, is some sort of metal shield over the fuel lines behind the fender liner, and another metal shield over the fuel lines that are exposed to the side of the tank inside the bed. Is that probably overkill, yes. However with gasoline like this I would like to take all precautions.

I wish Toyota would put a bigger tank in their trucks. I wouldn't want that one, it takes up too much bed space.

My F150 has a 36 gallon tank and after getting used to it the 21 gallon Tacoma tank is really small. My Tacoma only gets about 1 mpg better fuel mileage. The bigger tank really shines when towing. I only get 10-13 mpg doing that anyway with either truck.

I do respect the ingenuity; however I have never found myself 430 miles from a gas station.

I feel like something similiar to that is common in the south on trucks used for oil field work. Theirs aren't plumbed in but it's a big tank behind the cab that they can refill from.

I love the 36gal tank in my F150 too! At 23mpg highway on the computer I can pretty much get 700 to 800 miles to a tank!

It's also could be for the equipment they use out there :notsure:

When I worked for my local county we used transfer tanks to fill up the mowing tractors every morning as we parked the mowers in the ditch at the end of every day.

Wouldn't that also describe the stock tank? I also don't know what is more likely to rupture during an accident, a plastic tank in the stock location or an aluminum one mounted in the bed. :notsure:

Only a few times have I ever gone so far from civilization that I was concerned about fuel. I found just doing some thoughtful planning and a spare regular five gallon gas can in the bed (fortunately I have a locking camper top) was more than enough to mitigate the issue. That being said I wouldn't mind a larger stock gas tank.

At some point you have to recognize that the Tacoma is not as capable as our modern dreams and adventures seem to need. Many here would be much better off with a Sprinter for overland camping (you can install a 47 gallon tank!) or a Tundra/Sequioa for long haul driving/towing.

Frame gives the factory tank more protection,in the bed tanks are like fire bombs in accidents, seen it first hand ( mostly from gas spilling out and catching fire )a few times in my career, just saying.

My work Company truck is a 2500HD. It’s got a 34gal tank in it. I’ve been looking for ways that won’t break the bank to increase the range on my Tacoma. I hate stopping for gas.

I’ve been eyeballing the Titan Sidekick for a while now, but again it takes up bed space. The Long Range tank is awesome but I don’t need it enough to justify the price. Perhaps one day, but not yet.

So is it a gravity / siphon system? Or is there a transfer pump? I cant tell from the pics.

Same! Did a road trip to CO with a buddy earlier this year. We found that if we convoyed together for slightly better mileage we could make it almost exactly 4 hours / 240 miles at interstate speeds on a full tank. That was just about all I could take before I had to get up and move around!

I like the setup. I don't know that the rubber hoses have much UV protection so I would throw some plastic corrugated tubing over them.

Does any one have any first hand experience with the Long Range America tank?.. I’ve been thinking about.

I love mine. I installed it like 5 or 6 years ago and I enjoy feeling like I got my "stock" range again since I can go about 450 miles between fill-ups again. Since all the mods I have installed on the truck which robs me of gas mileage, it's nice to be able to not have to fill up twice a week anymore which saves me time on my daily commute. One quirk with mine, since it is an earlier generation, that the auto fuel shutoff doesn't work as well as the stock tank. Apparently, the guys over at LRA have fixed that issue with the current generations but mine will burp out maybe a cup of fuel from the fill port before the refuel nozzle automatically shuts off. There is one bracket that's a PIA to install and some of the other members didn't install it but I did. I broke the captive nut plate for the strap so dropping the tank for any in-tank work will not be pleasant but that's for future me to worry about. 10/10 would install again.
