Looks good man, I did my first @ 995 miles and had about the same amount of specks of metal as yours did. I was very happy to see it!
I average around 6k miles a year so she get's a yearly oil change and tire rotate.

Having my oil changed tomorrow morning..
I've put 11,500 miles since buying it new.

This will be my 3rd oil change....Overkill? Probably!

I'm changing mine every 4,000 ....also having transmission and rear end drained and refilled at 30,000... Toyota recommends 60,000...Nope that ain't happening.

I would suggest going the recommended 10k, but do what makes you comfortable. Read thru these threads and you will see 99% of the damage or failures of these trucks is due to the idiot holding the steering wheel... not the miles on oil changes. o_O

Always do my oil change every 5,000 miles with Synthetic oil and never had any problems..also synthetic oil keeps the engine cleaner.. I recommend it.

The maintenance booklet clearly says 5k mile oil changes if operating under stressful conditions to the truck. They are listed in the booklet . I’d venture to say most people fit at least one of these conditions . Why not play it safe and follow the severe service timelines. 10k miles is for perfect operating conditions. If you plan on keeping your truck for 20 plus years 5k is the way to go and using an oil like amsoil signature series to top it off. If you only keep the truck for few years then who cares just go the 10k between oil changes. Just my 2 cents and thought logic

I let the dealer do mine until warranty ran out, then I did it myself. Due to some unfortunate circumstances it was at 10,300 miles after the last dealer change, but synthetic oil is good so not worried.

It took me about 2 hours because I have full armor and I took my time and double/triple checked that I was doing everything properly. Discovered that I don't like how far away the oil filter is so I drained the pan and after 15 minutes or so put the plug back in and moved the catcher to under the filter. Pushing that dumb plastic valve tube thingy into the filter housing was a PITA because as soon as it clicks in the oil POURS out and goes over your glove and down your arm. Learning experience as they say.

You also have to watch out for the two rubber seals in the filter and the flat washer for the pan drain plug because it gets literally welded to the pan, at least mine was, and I had to pry it off with a flathead screwdriver. After cleaning everything and putting the new filter in with new seals I tightened it down and moved the oil catcher back under the pan and yanked out the plug again and let the few extra trickles drain, then assembled everything and ready for new oil.

Put a bit over 6 quarts in but after running it a while the dip stick shows it to be a bit overfilled yet manual says 6.2 quarts so I *guess* I'm okay...?

Next time I'll be able to do everything under an hour.

At 10300 between oil changes, you are good to go, no worries. I made an absolute mess while draining the oil so I got a Fumoto valve.

Yes, "that dumb plastic valve tube thingy" can be replaced with this:

I was surprised, but my dealer says twice a year for the free oil change. They dont care about the miles. So i will be getting my first at about 1000

It's hilarious that people who complain that they can't change their oil without making a mess freely disseminate OCI "advice".

Worst case, I would never go over 7k before changing the oil. I did my first oil change at 700 miles and there were metal particles trapped in the oil filter, so if anyone ever tells you, you don’t need an oil change within the first 1k miles, just smile and walk away. If you wanna keep the truck for a long time, change the oil every 5K.
I believe between 600-1000 is when you want to do the first oil change. I like to go to the dealership and buy 10 or more oil filters at once (no fake filters for me) and I like Pennzoil ultra platinum or Royal Purple oil.

If you aren’t gonna keep the truck for a long time, then who cares, do your oil change every 10k. Ya Toyota engineers are smart but 10k oil change intervals are a bad idea……. I don’t care what they say. They can change their oil every 10k lol. Is that engineer gonna buy you a new engine when you start burning oil at 100k miles? I highly doubt it.

    No

What's more funny is complaining about $5 oil filters, $13 5qt jugs (or free), after spending $40k on a $20k truck

Well, oil is free, so, you can do it whenever you want to
    whether that be 1000 mi
    or 1100 mi

in real life, actual engineers (not marketing or sales) change their oil every 5k.

Minimum 10k between changes for me for decades, never had an engine fail. The oil thread know-it-alls don’t really know much…

The Car Care Nut on youtube (a toyota freak who's worked on them for decades) has a teardown video on a car that saw 10k mile changes and 5k, the difference is actually staggering at 200k miles. YMMV, but for me, 5k changes are an easy and very cheap insurance on my expensive truck. The best part about 5k is, if I end up on a road trip right around that mileage and cant get to it, I dont worry so much for one oil change.

Point taken, but due to how quickly you responded to the comment, I assume you have eyes. I tend to take things I see on the internet with how credible the source is, what is shown, what evidence there is to back it up, common sense from my engineering background, etc... I live by the data, because data (and empirical evidence) are the only things that cant lie.

Me, and all of the other people who want their engines to run without fail well past 200k miles, will continue to do 5k oil changes. Its pretty well documented that 10k is a cost saving measure for OEMs. ToyotaCare only changes your oil twice instead of 4 times - they can market the car is minimal maintenance - and you bet your ass it'll get to 60k miles without issue, probably even 160k - but by then, its your problem - not toyota's.

Does anyone have pics, evidence or oil filters with say… 10,20k 50k,on them to compare to a new oil filter? I’m curious if there’s flow or clog issues that shows a potential long term problem. It would be a cool long term experiment.
