Bump up to 265/75-16 for better LT tire selection...

Hi, I'm thinking of bumping up to the 265/75-16 tire size to have a better selection of LT tires. Will a 265/75-16 tire fit, fully inflated, on the under-bed spare carrier?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

    Will fit fine.

Yep, I can also confirm it will fit fine. I have a full size 265/75/16 spare mounted to the spare rim that came with my truck and it sits in the usual spare tire spot under the bed. Plenty of clearance.

    Thanks.

Next up on the tire shopping front, if I go D or E load rated LT, is correct tire pressure. Using the calculator on tiresizes.com suggests 40 PSI for either D or E rated 265/75-16s, but that sounds awfully dental-work-rattling to me on pavement.

My truck is stock currently. I plan no lift. I do plan on swapping out the bump stops with Sumo Springs or Timbren replacements. I drive about 800 miles off pavement a year, give or take. The other 90% of the mileage is highway and surface streets. Nothing too difficult off roading - graded dirt, washboard, eroded 2-track, slickrock, few big rocks or boulders, and always to get to particular BLM campsites and not really off roading for its own sake.

I carry a pretty heavy load when off road, including astronomy equipment, paleontology and rockhunting tools, tent, food, shade structure, sleeping gear, Jerry can of extra fuel, 12-16 gallons of water (the camps I use are always dry camps), second full sized spare in the bed and a beefier jack, shovel, etc. No hard shell cap but rather a Softopper. On the stock suspension with stock bumps with this load it sometimes does bottom out on big wallows and has a bit of droopy butt, but not t the extent I find myself wanting to add a leaf.

What was your stock pressure? Not sure if DCLB is different, DCSB is 30 psi front/rear and that translates to 36 psi f/r on LT265/75R16s (doesn’t matter D or E).

I’ve been running E rated 265/75/16’s for about 42K miles now. I keep the PSI around 35 cold. Usually a little higher in the front tires. I think it rides just fine but I’m not super picky about ride quality since it’s a truck.

Yep, DCLB is the same 30 PSI on P-metric 265/70-16 SLs.

Stock OR tires are not P-metric, they are euro-metric (metric but no P). That’s why you’re landing on 40. 36 is what you need. P and euro have different capacities at each pressure.

I have E rated KO's 265/75 16 called BF Goodrich customer service they recommended 50 psi truck ride fine.

Yeah, especially on these light trucks. Unless you’re towing or have some absurd amount of weight on the truck.

I think the highest I’ve ever gone was 42psi. That was the end result of a cross country road trip during the summer, they were set to like 37 cold. Wayyyy too floaty on the highway at 42.

I’ve got mine at 37 cold (per calculator) and they will hit 42 on a warm day. They hit 44 towing. Never had any troubles with that. 40 is what they warm up to on a typical day and works well, never had any handling complaints.

Just do the chalk test. Fool proof way to ensure you're running the best pressure for tread wear

The cross wind may have been a major part of the floatiness I was feeling. We were crossing the plains of South Dakota and it was super windy.

50 psi, you gotta be joking! E rated tires are harsh enough at 30 psi, I can't imagine them at 50! Gotta feel like riding on Flintstone rock tires.

98% of the time, you'll never use the spare. If you do have to use it, it will get the job done. Big waste of money.

As far as 265/75/16s go, I absolutely loved my (C Load) Duratracs. Only wish they made them in the 33" pizza cutter size, but am quite content with my 255/80/17 Wildpeaks.

Fair point. It is a traditional elliptical spring rear truck. But my last all purpose ride was a Ram 1500 crew cab short bed with an independent rear suspension. With D-rated AT tires the Ram rode like butter even on LTs. A truck that rides like a car on the highway spoils you. Probably not in a good way. LOL
Thank you! I was not aware of that. Much less concerning.

I do a couple of 7-12 day trips a year. Camping and using telescopes by night and using the truck to explore and get to hiking trailheads by day. It's rare that I don't get at least one flat on these trips, and two flats aren't that uncommon. Once in a long while I even destroy a sidewall. No fun at all!

I'll check out the Falkens though I am leaning BFG KO2s or General Grabber A/TXs, as I've used both on past trucks.
