I purchased a cold air intake for my 2012 V6 and the instructions tell me to use the factory gasket from the old air filter to seal around the housing of the new one that goes into the intake. I have a K&N filter and there is no remove able gasket. Has anyone run into this problem? Or has anyone found a gasket to use?

I never knew it was removable?
But then again, I never looked either?

Maybe someone has a filter laying around?
I really don't remember the gasket on my wix filter being "removable".

You may have to get creative? cut the old one out/off?
You'd think K&N would have made the lid with an O-ring gasket to "take up the space"?

The OEM intake is already "cold air" because it gets air from inside the fender. If the aftermarket one gets it from the engine bay then you now have a hot air intake.

My outfit still has the factory intake tubing - after nearly ten years of driving and looking at both the intake temp and ambient, it has usually had a +6º/7ºF difference. Summertime road surface temps here in AZ have to be seen to believe them - so sitting still in traffic has a much higher result.

The exposure of the intake tubing to the steady blast of heat from the radiator probably has as much effect on intake temp as anything - when the vehicle is in motion. If you could run an elbow up to the hood, insulate it, and seal on an outside tube / stack - you might get something close to ambient temp.

The bad news about "cold air" systems - Holley carburetor company published data they accumulated from dyno tests in very controlled conditions. Their data shows that dropping the intake air temp by 10ºF nets a HP increase of 1%. Judging from my own trucks numbers - not much gain to fooling with it.

the gain is to put a snorkel or cowl intake that provides cold air that is clean, making the engine filter cleaner, and preventing dust and water ingress such as adding a Syklone.

on a slow NA engine air speed, amount, and temp is not in shortage. Fuel is. The only way to dramatically increase fuel and air is to cram it in with forced induction and increase fueling to match with injectors, flow, and pump.

@GREENBIRD56, I’ve never seen one that was removable either. I thought they were crazy.

The filter ensures no dirt gets ingested.

I have found an air filter with removable gasket. My local Napa has them
