The pieces in the pictures were not welded going uphill. I just showed a sample of my practicing.

    How different are the settings?

    Interesting.

I need to weld extended shock mounts on my truck, and they need to be welded vertically.

Fuck like 50-100ipm and maybe up to 2-3v difference

Are you an experienced welder already? Trade work?

No - hobby welder. Wanting to expand my capability/knowledge.

I just did a quick search, and found on weldpundit.com talking about vertical welding. It described my issue exactly. I need to study page, and try again.

There's countless arguments on when to use uphill vs downhill and whatnot

Me, I've done uphill and downhill in the professional world, and do little of it as a side gig

I only used vertical up when I was running on thick mild as I wanted to ensure penetration; on thinner you can easily develop a ton of undercut as your base metal soaks heat (heat rises) and will be super hot by the time you finish your weld up top

Being a hobbyist, slow down, and practice but if you need to weld something now, work on downhill

Remember, angle of your torch matters a lot when it comes to 3F or 3G

    Why?

I see no reason for that needing to be vertical welded.

    Can you elaborate on reason?

I have all the time I need to practice. Parts have been sitting on my shelf for months - what's another year? LOL

    Simple.

The brackets that mount to the frame have vertical legs that attach to the side (the vertical webbing) of the frame.

I assumed that was how they are mounted. I just don't know why they have to be uphill welded.

Both frame and bracket are just degrees of sheet metal.

60S welding wire has a sheet strength of 60,000 lbs/ inch of weld.

The frame material will rip long before the weld fails.

I just don't see this as something that needs the extra penetration of an uphill vertical weld. Its sheet metal. You will have no trouble getting penetration welding down.

I do not have experience welding shock mounts, but I do have lots experience welding on truck frames.

Also if it is strictly a shock mount it only has to hold up to the dampening forces of the shock itself.

ignore this if this is a coil over mount for a 3 link setup.

Frames are 1/8" thick; you do not need to weld uphill especially on thin steel as a novice

I did not realize there is such difference between uphill and downhill welding. I understand now (been doing some more reading).

Yes, downhill will be plenty fine for the shock mounts.

If you are only a hobbyist, you are a very serious hobbyist. :)

You are very correct about the settings. Thank you for the prompt to search - I've done some very interesting reading this morning and learned a lot.

    Now to go practice more...
