Please help me avoid the dealership!

I have a 2015 Tacoma TRD. Yesterday on my way to work, I started my truck and my Entune radio display went completely white. No response to any buttons or when I tried to hard reset on the power button.

I drove with it to work like that, turned off the engine and the screen was still white. I was in a hurry so I just left it and then after work when I came back out, nothing had changed and the white screen remained the entire time. I’m lucky it didn’t drain my battery and was able to get home.

When I got home, I took out both radio fuses and waited a couple minutes. Put them back in and started my truck and still nothing. I took the fuses back out and also disconnected my battery and this also didn’t work.

I can’t find any other info on what I could try to do next, and unless the radio is completely broken, I really would like to try to fix it myself. I’m hoping that if I can at least get the system to reset, I can then update Entune and see if that helps. I already have the newest version ready to go on a flash drive, I just can’t do anything until this pesty white screen goes away.

    Please help me! :confused::confused::confused::confused:

Disconnect both battery terminals, touch them together for about 10 seconds, wait about a minute, then put them back on the battery. If nothing changes, you’re SOL unfortunately.
Dealer will tell you the radio is dead and try to sell you a replacement for 2 grand
Best bet is to head to Best Buy and get a new radio lol

It’s a Nav. I took it to the dealership and behold... I paid $70 for them to tell me it’s dead. I’m still skeptical of that diagnosis because they couldn’t explain to me what happened or how they even determined it’s unfixable. They also wanted to sell me a new one for almost $1000 which was also not a surprise lol.

Anyway, I tried to troubleshoot it any way I know how... but I think I’m just going to have to look for a decent after-market one unless anyone has any other suggestions??

    Thank you for the input

Yah not surprised. I have a 4runner with Entune, or at least it did have Entune until it did a SW upgrade and installed Alexa for me. Not that Entune is great, but I did not buy a truck with Alexa, like WTF?

Toyota has long had an issue with electronics. They let the children design them.

I've seen in the 4runner forums people upgrade the head unit and add and extra box to allow access to all the same setting available.

Check E-bay for a Toyota replacement maybe? I added the nav to mine when I bought the truck because a member here was selling brand new units for $400 in 2015.

Entune kinda sucks anyways, at least mine does. If you gotta replace it I'd go aftermarket.

@destin_meeks What does touching the two battery terminals together do? Just curious. I've pulled my head unit and no dice. This might be a last-ditch attempt but I'm leery of what this does. Thanks for any elaboration.

Discharges the electrical charge being held anywhere in the circuit.

OP, your issue isn’t a radio, it’s the software in the radio. That’s why they don’t have an answer for what happened. Software failure isn’t really quantifiable.

it drains any remaining power from any capacitors to to get as close to a “reset” as you can get. Give it a shot, but don’t expect a miracle

Thank you all for your help, through some miracle or the warm October weather, I was able to get my screen working again.

Question for next time, does anyone know if this is a nav or non-nav unit? I appreciate any guidance on this. This truck is three weeks old to me and the head unit has been out for one of those weeks...

You might consider seeing if there are any automobile stereo shops in your area who do repairs. If you decide to buy a new one dear lord don't buy another Toyota Entune, get an aftermarket that will fit your 2015 Tacoma, with Apple Carplay if you have an iphone, or Android Auto if you use an Android phone. You don't have to buy the most expensive to get that. Search here, scroll down to "find what fits your car" and you can search in then in the forum.

I have a Nav Unit in my 15 that I need to pull out....Because I've been sitting on a New Headunit for a year and have been too lazy to install it.
