If they took a buck from here at the end of November and put him down there, he'd be wore out for sure!

Hunters in Florida joke about the rut occurring all year long and that's not far from being true! :D My county has 4 different phases of the rut!

It's something worth studying for sure because I'm due east of the Central Florida blob on the Volusia/Brevard line and the doe I killed yesterday had 3 babies in her belly I'd guess 2-3 months into the cycle. Meaning she was bred Nov 1 at the latest.

Congratulations on meat drop!! Great stories & memories, making me want to slide out & get one more doe but absolutely no freezer space. I have 100# batch of salami & 50# bologna in my crosshairs now.

Yeh I'm throwing up a temporary stand trying to take a hog this afternoon. Pretty good sized boar hog probably 225+ lbs, we'll see what happens. I've had plenty of action in my little corner of the lease this week.

So we have two different sub species of deer here. Back in like the 60's they brought in like 20 deer from Michigan and put them in bankhead national forest, eventually south Alabama deer (most likely Floridian tbh) migrated more and more north as the Michigan deer population grew and they spread south; I assume there was a natural attraction somehow that drew the two subs together. At any rate the Michigan deer still rut about a month earlier than the Alabama deer. Usually the last week of November first week of December is the time to see the stupid come out in the Michigan deer, then the secondary/minor (whatever they call when the does that didn't get bread first come back in heat) hits around Christmas. Alabama deer typically chase the first and last week of January. A few years back they bumped our season back to Feb 10th, but it's buck only where I am after new years...

Any doe that isn't bread will cycle again in another 21 to 30 days. Does held in pens have cycled up to seven times. That's basically 7 months the deer could stay fertile. So in any given place the length of the rut will be determined by the buck to doe ratio. Here in Indiana we definitely have a secondary rut in December, and I wouldn't be surprised to see breeding activity taking place in January.

We typically stay on top of breaking deer down because, well Alabama ain't nature's walk in cooler. But in under 2 hours the deer went from walking around to on ice... Still had steam coming off the carcass when we got everything in the cooler. https://youtube.com/shorts/pLs1VmdvIzA?si=Y2iQUGJZIosj07wb

    Same here.
Secondary rut here in ct is usually first week of December to maybe end of the second week.
Couple years ago I got into some bloody pizz on Dec 5 and nailed a buck that was sniffing around.

Straight Virginia subspecies here for all of mainland SC. 1st week of November is main rut here in the piedmont. Varies with mid October in low state and around Thanksgiving in mountains. Usually see a secondary rut here in late November and a third in mid- late December that’s usually yearling does coming in for first time. At least that’s what I’ve seen. I’ve also seen two hard horned bucks pushing a doe in early March but that was 30+ years ago when the deer density was far lower here. Killed a few bucks back then completely free of deer ticks. Fat luck with that now. Have seen adult bucks with new velvet nubs working scrapes in April. Makes me wonder if they’d breed a doe that would stand for them.
